Exhaust Questions
« on: May 22, 2010, 06:09:32 AM »
I suspect my cat has gone bad. What size is the exhaust on a 95 2.5? I measured mine at 2" but the listings for complete systems says 2.25". I'll be doing a cat back plus the cat. Also, is anyone running a fake cat? Pros/cons? I should be able to piece a system together for about 1/3 the cost. :thumb: I just need to be sure of the size pipe before I order. Thanks!

Ya its 2" .I slapped on a cat back kit on mine the other day,and just said hell with the cat,no emissions here and 100 smacks compared to 12 for pipe and exhaust clamps.either way you go you will have to reduce the 2 1/4  cat back down to 2 inch, someone's gotta make a cat thats 2" inlet and 2 1/4 outlet if you gotta go that route,
  good luck

is that stock or aftermarket down pipe,my stock one right before the cat, a 2" bell slid right onto it,then I had to go from that to 2 1/4 into the muffler

is a pacesetter, could be that the stock is 2'' - the cat i have is a universal 2.25'' in/out - can't remember what the stock one was (the downpipe),  if it was a 2'' i probably had a 2 to 2.25 adapter in between - should be available at an auto parts store.

EDIT: you could also sleeve it with a piece of 2'' ID piece - that would fit right inside the 2-1/4'' OD and over the 2'' OD pipe.

I really like teh Car-sound/Magna Flow Direct-Fit cats.  If you have a cat-back, it's pretty much bolt on.  A YJ will be 2" in and usually 2-1/4" out

running a fake cat on anything newer then 96 will cause engine light unless you do some tampering to get the light out.  pre-96 doesn't monitor the cat. no cat performance gains are very minimal vs a high flow cat.

also depends if they have checks or emission tests in you area.

I just picked up a Monster Banks Cat Bak system with a high flow cat for only $100 off craigslist.  It has 2"-2 1/4".  My only problem is I need to grind of the mig welds someone so graciously added around the down pipe to the cat, grrrr.   :brick:

Better a high flow cat then getting caught with out one.

do you have emission testing or do they just look under your rig for a visual inspection?  I know were I live in Ontario the most we get is a visual so if you put a pipe in it they wouldn't know that it doesn't work.

southern Ontario has actual emission testing you have to go under every few years and if it doesn't pass you have to bring it up to par.

They're supposed to a driving test at 15 and 35 on a rolling dyno with a exhaust emissions sniffer, then they do a evap test, gas cap and gas tank pressure test, then a visual over all.

It passed with flying colors, but 35 isn't the speed I was having the problem at.  I believe I just confirmed that it was the cat.  Drove my usual route, and I stayed in 5th gear for 90-95% of the way cruising at 65-70...  WWOOOTTT!!!!   I'm leaving well enough alone now (even if it sounds like a folders can is strapped to my exhaust ;) )
