Topic: Flat towing with a auto

My neighbor has a TJ with a auto. He is wanting to flat tow. I have never done it so I told him I would ask what to do with gear selection.

Tranny = N
T-case = N

is that how it should be?

NO.  Tranny in Park and transfer case in neutral.  Check the owner's manual, it will state the same thing.

If you put the tranny in neutral, it's possible that the viscous properties of the transfer case fluid will spin the transmission and burn it up since the internals are spinning without the pump pushing fluid throughout the tranny.

And if you have any lockers, disconnect the rear driveshaft and put the tcase in 2wd.  Most NP231's lock the front and rear output shafts together in Neutral which makes the flat towed vehicle not steer as well if there are lockers in it.

Regardless of the lockers, rear driveshaft removed and tcase in 2wd keeps the fewest parts spinning and makes tcase issues less likely.

unless he's got an SYE or some newer t-case (they got smarter in time and the seal is no longer on the slip yoke).

You just disconnect it at the rear axle and wire/bungy cord it up out of the way.  Even with my SYE I've got no reason to fully remove the driveshaft (I use a tow dolly)

The output of the TJ tcase is not sealed with the rear ds yoke like earlier Wranglers. You can totally remove both front and rear ds and not have any issues. You can remove either front and rear ds from the pinion yoke and hang them up off the frame and not have an issue.
