Topic: Flex-a-lite fan installation help please

So, I just got my electric fan today and was super excited to install it but frankly, I'm stuck, and it's only been 15 minutes.  It says I have to find a place to mount the control module.  Where should I do that?  Do I need to drill into the fender well or something or just zip tie it on anywhere there's room?

Any help or suggestions from anyone who has installed this fan would be appreciated.  Not only with regard to the control box but any other advice would be handy.

If you search for 'electric fan', you'll find a couple of our write-ups for our installs.  I've gone through two because I went ghetto initially and then upgraded to gold plated ghetto.

I've mounted a electric thermostat controller to the inner fender, ran it to keyed iginition from the firewall off a relay plug for the torque lockup, some photos are in the posts at the bottom.

So you DO have to drill into the fender well to mount the thing?

You can drill or just use some self tapping screws.  Drilling is easier.

What fan, specifically are we talking about here?  It doesn't sound like the Mustang/Wrangler Flex-a-lite fan.

It is the wrangler flex-a-lite fan.  I am having a little difficulty because the instructions are a tad cryptic

I'm having difficulty figuring out what to hook it to so the fan only runs when the ignition is on.  I hooked it up to the battery since it is always hot and everything works perfectly I just don't want the fan to keep running while the ignition is off.  So what are my options?

You need to find a wire that sends power out when the key is in the on position, the one for the radio would be an easy one to access or just wire it up to a switch and turn it on an off manually.  Some of the guys on here are running a fan controller.  Jfrabat has one i believe, if you check his build thread he has info on what type it is

On my 95 yj, it's a white wire with a yellow stripe (At the PCM, on the relay for the torque converter lock up, etc.. ).  I can find it all over my harness under the hood.

I wired mine to the cigar lighter....that way I was close to the steering column when mounting the on/off switch.

i think that one has 12v while cranking as well (fused ignition switch output), should be one that only has 12v key on so it won't spin the fan when you crank - the cig lighter would be a better choice imo (like Mozman said)

Yep...my fan won't kick up on start-up until the Jeep is actually running.

Thats not a bad idea, although mine will only turn on if the key is in the on or accessory position but its loud enough that you dont forget to turn it off if the jeeps not running

well...mine will go on in the accessory position as well...... ...but like all accessories, it won't come on as the engine is trying to turn over.
