Clanking???
« on: July 06, 2010, 06:30:40 PM »
Whenever I shift between 2800-3000 rpm as the motor decels this sputtering clanking rattles through my jeep. Sometimes it happens whenever I rev up without the tranny engaged, once again at the same rpms.... does anyone know what this could be, god I hope it's not my valves slapping into my pistons  :gimp:

did you try revving up with the hood open and see if you can determine if it comes from the engine bay and more specifically from the engine?

if you hear the clanking/rattling throughout the whole Jeep maybe is your exhaust touching something or some lose piece of metal like the heatshield or clutch inspection cover.

won't be your valves touching the pistons as they would bend at that point, but could be some other things if it does come from the engine

just remembered that when my cooling fan clutch went out i thought i have a piston skirt broken, so you might want to have a look at that as well

Could be a loose heat shield on the cat or a loose baffle.  I suspect it's exhaust related.

Those exhaust noises can play some tricks on you.  I once thought my clutch was making noise because the noise always coincided with the use of the clutch pedal.  It turned out the tail pipe has come unwelded.

Since I've borrowed a set of these from my college's automotive dept, they're the only way to go for hunting down noise. (Their's were Matco branded, but looked identical.)  My next major repair, I'm buying a set of these.

Well, I'm pretty sure it's either somethings knocked a little loose with my exhaust, or I have a loose motor mount, but it's not affecting performance so until something breaks or I upgrade I'm not going to worry about it

Check the pass. side motor mount if it's a YJ.  There is a small metal spacer that is known for breaking.
