Hard starting
« on: November 06, 2010, 07:52:40 PM »
It seems like our 94 YJ 2.5 is a little hard to start...have changed the fuel filter, air filter, plugs, wire, cap and rotor also the coolant temp sensor.   I thought this would fix it but has not.  When cold it takes at least 4-5 revolutions before it will start and about 3 when warm.  So, is this normal for these or what?  Dirty injectors, coil, fuel pump?  What's next?  Also if a new coil is recommended, is there a HO coil available for the 2.5?

Appreciate the help!

there are 2 coolant temp sensors, 1 for the Fuel Injection Computer (PCM) and 1 for the water temp gauge, the one affecting your start would be the one for the PCM

my guess is you lose fuel pressure (either the FPR or the check valve) or you have low fuel pressure due to bad FPR or fuel pump (could also be the FPR o-ring) - try to put the contact on 2 or 3 times without cranking it (you can hear the pump starting when you put the contact on) - the last time leave it on for 2 seconds and then crank it right away (don't wait for the pump to stop) - see if that makes it start faster, if it is then it's fuel related (one of the reasons described above).

I'd wait 2-3 seconds before cranking, should fire right up.  Very common.
