Jonah Street Dakar Daily #16: Cruising After A Bruising
January 13, 2011 at 11:37 pm by Matthew Miles

http://blog.cycleworld.com/?p=2621#more-2621

Photos by Jonah Street.

Jonah Street made a solid effort in the Dakar Rally today, completing the stage without any major mishaps. The course was brutal, though, and, on the heels of yesterday’s unavoidable crash and unfortunate navigational troubles, it took its toll on the American racer.

Here’s the latest, straight from Street:

“I’m very happy to be done with today’s stage. Getting through it safely was a great bonus. I cruised for most of the day. After yesterday’s crash, I’m terribly sore. Tomorrow, the stage appears to be a lot smoother. Hopefully, I can pick up the pace and grab some more time.

“Today was drama-free, which was nice. I didn’t hit any gas tanks, which was also nice. But the course was really rocky, and my wrists didn’t like that. At this point, I’m trying to avoid hitting anything that will take me out of the rally. I’ve settled into my position—unofficially 14th overall. My main goal now is to finish safely.

“I’m looking forward to wrapping up this race and heading home so we can get an early start on our program for 2011. We learned a lot about the race this year, and I have to say, based on the riding conditions, terrain and overall situation, this has been the toughest Dakar I’ve ever done.”

“I shot this picture of a guy working a checkpoint on the course today,” said Jonah Street. “He was actually working—in a banana hammock!

Only if you know it's ARB though.  Otherwise, you wouldn't know who made that stuff.  Interesting to see a Ford Raptor though.  Seems to be doing alight.  If it finishes, it will be a big achievement.  Dodge will have to be able to back their Ram Runner up with some real results.

Hino wins the "Series Production Trucks" and "Under 10-liter" championships in the Dakar Rally 2011.

Also achieves 20 finishes in as many years, setting a new record for the number of consecutive finishes.

Hino Motors, Ltd. (Hino) competed in the Argentina-Chile Dakar Rally 2011 that was held from January 1 to 16, 2011 (local time). Hino won the championship in the “Series Production Trucks” and “Under 10-liter” categories, and also achieved 20* finishes in as many years, setting a new record for the number of consecutive finishes.

Hino entered this rally for the first time in 1991 -- the first Japanese truck manufacturer to do so -- and in 1994 and 1995, came 2nd place overall in the Trucks category. In 1997, Hino entered three trucks and became the first in the history of this rally to achieve a 1-2-3 clean sweep in this category. In subsequent years, Hino has won three 2nd place titles in the Trucks category as well as eleven championships in the Under 10-liter category over the twelve races since the category was first introduced in 1996, making it a force to be reckoned with in the truck division.

Continuing from last year, Hino has teamed up with Team Sugawara -- headed by Yoshimasa Sugawara who holds the record for the most consecutive entries in the Dakar Rally at 28 entries, and his son Teruhito Sugawara -- and took part in this rally as the HINO TEAM SUGAWARA. Hino dispatched five mechanics that were chosen from Hino Motors and Hino distributors to meet the challenges of this rally and reflecting the concerted effort of the entire Hino group.

As a result, amidst the 68 entries in the Trucks category -- many of which were either specially developed for racing or so-called monster trucks that boasted nearly twice the engine displacement of the HINO 500 Series -- Teruhito Sugawara won the championships in both the Under 10-liter category and the Series Production Trucks category, and 9th place in the Trucks category overall. Yoshimasa Sugawara won 2nd, 3rd, and 13th places in these respective categories.

Hino is committed to continuing to deliver products and services that meet our customers’ needs by leveraging the fighting spirit and technological capabilities which have been accumulated over the two decades since first entering the rally.

* Twenty consecutivefinishes since our first entry in 1991, excepting 2008 when the rally was canceled due to political unrest.

Shoji Kondo, Chairman of the Board, Hino
We are very happy with how we did in this rally as our rankings were better than what we had expected. Not only that, it was great to be in South America where the rally was actually being held and taking part in the excitement. For me, this has reconfirmed the importance of our activities. Being Hino's 20th anniversary of racing in this rally, I am convinced that there is power in continuity. I am very glad that we were able to continue thus far, thanks in no small degree to the passion of Mr. Sugawara and his team.

Tsunehiko Fujii, Senior Managing Director, Member of the Board, Hino
I would like to applaud everybody on the team. I believe this rally must have been one of the most difficult rallies from a mechanic's perspective, but thanks to their work, we've been able to maintain good rankings through the end of the race. It appears these results reflect the improvements that we've been making to our trucks, so I think it is within our reach to join the top group among the best 10 in the Trucks category. What an amazing achievement to come in at the 13th place at the age of 69! I was in awe. We have had visits by Hino's overseas distributors who cheered us on, confirming my feeling that the world is giving our activities credit. We are excited to continue this activity moving forward.

Yoshimasa Sugawara, Team Director and Driver, Car 1
Teruhito ran a great race to achieve 1st place, and I was able to finish the race. As much as I'm surprised at these results, I'm very satisfied. I am filled with gratitude for everyone's support. Thank you very much. In any case, I didn't think it would rain at the podium. I thought that was very South American.

Hiroyuki Sugiura, Navigator, Car 1
I was very happy to get up on the podium at the goal. It was exciting with a lot of people cheering on. I would like to thank chairman Mr. Kondo and senior managing director Mr. Fujii of Hino who came to cheer us on. I consider this to be the starting point in developing myself further as a navigator.

Teruhito Sugawara, Driver, Car 2
We owe a great deal to everyone's support for being able to deliver results under these very difficult conditions. I will not be sitting on our laurels of 20 consecutive finishes in the race, and intend to wash all such thoughts away just as the rain gave the podium a good wash. I am committed to taking on new challenges.

Seiichi Suzuki, Navigator, Car 2
I am very happy that both of our trucks finished and we were able to deliver results. While our trucks experienced no major problems, the coolant temperature rose on some instances regardless of the modifications we had made. So I got a real feel of the challenging nature of our endeavors.

Takayuki Monma, Mechanic (Overseas Parts & Service Div., Hino)
I'm very happy that both trucks ran a solid race without any major problems, and were able to deliver results. We were also able to redeem our disappointment from last year (when one of our trucks had to withdraw from the race). I'm very thankful to everyone's support.

Masayoshi Yamamoto, Mechanic (same as above)
I am very happy that we were able to reach the goal without event. None of us mechanics were injured, and I feel a great sense of achievement in that both of our trucks were able to finish. This was my first experience working on a rally site so I worked so hard. I also think that there were situations where my Spanish ability came in handy.

Takashi Sanno, Mechanic (Yokohama Hino Motors, Ltd.)
I had an understanding of how things would be during the rally, where day and night would be reversed, but I struggled as I found it hard to recover from my exhaustion. In terms of work, however, we never had to perform any major work other than taking apart the brakes over and over again. I believe this was because the trucks were refined to near perfection.

Hiroshi Hashiba, Mechanic (Ishikawa Hino Motors, Ltd.)
When I saw much lower trucks parked at the Parc-Fermes at the end of the rally, the fact that this rally was being staged under extremely harsh conditions really sunk in. As this was the second time for me at this rally, I think I was able to give advice to other mechanics on things such as how to set up at the bivouac. I am exhausted, but all that exhaustion just gets swept away once I’m on the podium. That feeling was the same as the last time.

Kenichi Suetsugu, Mechanic (Hiroshima Hino Motors, Ltd.)
I have been involved since September when the trucks were being constructed, so it's been a long time. At the podium, it really sunk in that we had made it. The rain poured down hard, but that'll be part of a good memory too. After having worked on the site, I felt that I got into the groove in the second week. I've noticed some areas where the HINO 500 Series could use some improvement so if I have another opportunity to come, I think I will be able to work more efficiently.

Hino in the Dakar Rally

Hino Motors, Ltd. ("Hino") participated in the Dakar Rally (then known as the Paris-Dakar Rally) for the first time in 1991, as the first entrant from among all the Japanese truck manufacturers. Its truck achieved 2nd position in the overall Truck Division in 1994 and 1995. In 1997, after undergoing reinforcement to aim at an overall victory, Hino became the first to dominate the top three positions in the overall Truck Division, an unprecedented finish in Dakar Rally history.

The team has continuously participated in the rally as one of the top teams in its division; for example, it has come in 2nd position in the overall Truck Division 3 times. Moreover, it achieved 7 victories in the under 10-liters category between 1996 and 2002, since this class was established. This class was abolished in 2003, 2004, and 2006. Hino won victories in 2005, 2007, and also in this 2010 rally.

Dakar 2011: The World's Most Dangerous Race
By Aaron Nelsen / Copiapó

The prevailing image of Chile's Atacama Desert is desolate — the mountainous moonscape where 33 miners were trapped underground for 70 days last year until their triumphant rescue. But the driest place on earth has another side. A miraculous sea of flowers blooms there every few years when rain does fall. And this month, for the third straight year, the 16-day Dakar Rally, arguably the world's most prestigious, grueling and dangerous marathon off-road race, or "raid," is winding much of its way through the Atacama, turning it into a deafening, carnivalesque roar of hundreds of cars, trucks, motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles. "Seeing [this] up close is the maximum emotion," says Gines Pulgar, who drove 3,000 km (1,864 mls) from southern Chile this week to follow the endurance epic, which ends on Sunday in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

What South Americans like Pulgar thought would be just a temporary spectacle could become a permanent, and lucrative, fixture on their continent. Until a couple years ago the Dakar, first held in 1978, had been a European-African rally raid, run from Paris to Dakar, Senegal (with vehicles ferried across the Strait of Gibraltar), and back again. But terrorism concerns in North Africa, which forced cancellation of the 2008 running, prompted the race's overseer, the French Amaury Sports Organization, to find a new locale, at least provisionally. (See pictures of this year's Dakar rally.)

Argentina and northern Chile offered the right, challenging terrain — free of security threats — and the rally picked up again in the New World in 2009. This year it's a 9,618 km (5,976 mls), 13-stage odyssey that started on Jan. 1 in Buenos Aires. It headed through the sierras that separate the two countries, looping through the Atacama to Chile's Pacific coast, and finishes back in B.A. on Jan. 16. The drivers and riders locate designated points with little more than maps and compasses. (Comment on this story.)

Some of the rally's most exciting moments have come in the Chilean desert, near the dusty mining town of Copiapó — the only city to play host to legs of the rally all three years it's been held in South America — where the punishing sun and topography have put numerous entrants out of the running. This year's 9th and 10th stages were a tortuous route of mountains and dunes from Antofogasta, Chile, through Copiapó and back into Argentina, forcing out veteran drivers like Team Hummer's Eliseo Salazar, 57, of Chile, who blew his transmission in the soft sand. "It was brutal," he says. But the region "is the heart of the Dakar," says Nicolás Noman Garrido, governor of the Atacama province. "I won't even speculate about the possibility of [the rally] not returning next year." (See pictures of a half-century of Daytona.)

Indeed, rally officials confirmed on Friday that next year's Dakar will be held again in Argentina and Chile. "South America has projected the Dakar in its popular historic dimension," says Dakar Deputy Director Frédéric Lequien. "Argentina and Chile are most welcoming territory for the Dakar... and for them [the race] is a global showcase."

So much so that Peru, Bolivia and Brazil have expressed interest in hosting a stretch of the Dakar themselves. That's largely because the showcase brings cases of money. There really is no prize to be won in the Dakar; the more than 400 teams that participate do it not for cash but cachet. But many of them, with power sponsors like BMW, Mitsubishi, Volkswagen and Hummer, and famous racers like NASCAR and Indy 500 star Robby Gordon, spend millions of dollars for the souped-up vehicles, crews, equipment, transport and lodging a serious run requires. "This is a rich man's sport," says Roger Willis, one of a dozen members of Gordon's Hummer crew. (Mechanical failure forced Gordon to drop out last week near the Argentina-Chile border.) Argentina paid $5 million to host the Dakar this year — and expects to see a return of $170 million. The region around Copiapó expects 15,000 visitors spending almost $10 million. (See pictures of the Chilean miners.)

In stark contrast to the opulence of the big-name camps that pitched tents outside Copiapó — and whose trucks open like garage doors revealing replacement tires and myriad drawers full of neatly labeled tools — is the thrift of off-road enthusiasts like architect Juan Carlos Unzue. Like most South America racing fans who never thought they'd see a rally of Dakar's caliber held there, Unzue, 48, sold a plot of land near his home in Villa Constitución, Argentina, to finance his lifelong dream of riding alongside the world's best racers. He's fallen from his motorcycle twice, and he was even robbed in broad daylight waiting for a light to change in Jujuy, Argentina. Still, he's beaming. "I ran across somebody on Robby Gordon's team," says Unzue, "and he told me, 'You have bigger balls than we do, you're out here without a team.' They couldn't believe it."

And for good reason. Each stage of the Dakar is a slow weeding-out process where vehicles break down irreparably; drivers break limbs, lose their bearings and sometimes flirt with death. (In fact, 49 Dakar racers have been killed in its 32-year history.). That drama fascinates locals like Pulgar, a seaweed packer, who's brought his son in their purple 1955 Ford to catch every turn of the Dakar in Chile. Their lips are chapped and faces burnt. But, says Pulgar, "I didn't want to miss my chance to experience this with my son. I didn't want to say the Dakar was here and we missed it." Chances are the world's top rally raid will roar through their backyard for years to come.

Dakar 2011: 1st, 1st and 1st. Again
by Cassio Cortes on Jan 16, 2011

http://www.redbull.com/cs/Satellite/en_INT/Article/Dakar-2011--1st,-1st-and-1st.-Again-021242947843565

It's a strike rate of 100 percent. Since the Dakar rally moved from Africa to South America back in 2009, no one but Red Bull drivers and riders have stepped on the top step of the podium in the event's three main categories.

This Saturday (Jan 15) in little Baradero in Argentina, home to the finish line of the 13th and final special stage, that perfect record was maintained by Nasser Al-Attiyah, Marc Coma and Vladimir Chagin.

Perhaps happiest of the three was Al-Attiyah. The Qatari showed in 2011 the consistency to back his well-known speed and clinched his maiden Dakar triumph in the Car category aboard the Red Bull Volkswagen Touareg. He becomes the first Arab ever to win the famous enduro.

"Winning the Dakar had been my dream for a long time, and now it has finally come true," celebrated 40-year-old Nasser, who took control of the race during Stage 9 after rival and teammate, 2010 winner Carlos Sainz, got stuck twice on soft sand – arguably Nasser's natural habitat given his Middle Eastern origins.

"Since 2009 I felt that my dream was coming closer, and that in every rally with Volkswagen I was learning a lot," added the Arab, who joined the squad with a reputation of being very fast but sometimes error-prone.

"This year it showed: I had just one flat tyre during the entire rally, versus six in 2010. I never drink any alcohol, but maybe (co-driver) Timo (Gottschalk) can open two bottles of champagne today!"

Sainz found little consolation in winning most stages (six) but ending up third overall: "This was a very hard Dakar for us," said 'El Matador', who fell out of contention for back-to-back victories after losing one hour repairing his right-front suspension on Stage 11.

"But Nasser and Timo did a great job and took a deserving win. I've been in this business for 30 years, and sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. The important thing is to keep enjoying it."

Also boasting a tired but exuberant smile at the Autodromo de Baradero was KTM rider Marc Coma. The Spaniard not only took his third career Bike win in the world's toughest rally, he also tied the number of victories of the man sometimes referred to as his "best enemy", fellow Red Bull and KTM rider Cyril Despres, who finished second overall.

"We won it when we didn't lose it," Coma insightfully summarised. "That's what the Dakar is all about: trying not to make any mistakes and taking advantage when the competition makes them."

"We made two little mistakes over 15 days, and in the Dakar that's the difference between winning or not," Cyril admitted. "Of course I would have preferred to win, but at least we made it to the finish on the podium for the eighth time."

Finally, another in-house duel, this time at Red Bull Kamaz, saw Vladimir Chagin clinch his seventh career Truck victory prevailing in the battle with countryman and teammate Firdaus Kabirov. The Russian also brought his total of career stage wins to 63, a record among all categories.

It's a testament to the challenges presented over 9500km by the Dakar that no driver or rider has achieved a three-peat since the event switched to Argentina-Chile. Below the list of winners 2009-2011 - all Red Bull athletes:

Dakar - Dakar could expand horizons

Mon, 17 Jan 03:46:00 2011

The Dakar Rally, held in Argentina and Chile for the third time although with less spectators than in the previous two years, could expand into Brazil, Paraguay and Peru in 2012.

The world famous race, moved from west Africa to South America over security concerns, was won by Qatar's Nasser al-Attiyah on Saturday. The race ended officially in Buenos Aires on Sunday.

French race director Etienne Lavigne hinted the race could be opened to more countries in South America.

"Every year we try to build on a new idea. We're thinking it could be good to open the race to other countries while including Chile and Argentina," Lavigne said after being asked if next year's race might end in Lima instead of Buenos Aires.

But the Frenchman said decisions would be taken from March and "everything depends on the authorities in those countries."

The prize giving at the Obelisk in central Buenos Aires was brought forward over warnings of an impending storm in the Argentine capital on Sunday afternoon and relatively few spectators showed up.

The other winners at the end of the gruelling 16-day race were Marc Coma on motorbikes, Argentine Alejandro Patronelli on quads and Russian Vladimir Chagin in trucks.

"Now the world will know where Qatar is," said Al-Attiyah, draped in Qatari and Argentine flags, possibly forgetting his country only last month won the right to stage football's World Cup in 2022.

"I'm happy with Argentines' support and I thank them," he said while his Volkswagen team mate, Spanish former world rally champion Carlos Sainz, had to settle for third place having won the race last year and despite winning seven stages this year.

Fellow Spaniard Coma, winning his third Dakar motorbike title, said: "I was never able to relax because one stage finished and another harder one followed. The Dakar is very tough but this victory is the prize for all our work."
