Vacuum hoses

OK, so I just bought the Jeep, and did the rebuild on my carb this weekend (single barrel Carter/Weber).  Trouble is, I didn't label all the vacuum hoses, because I had the vacuum hose routing diagram to go by, and there were some loose hoses to begin with, anyway.  Now that I've got the carb back on, I've hooked up most of the hoses, but reading the vacuum diagram is like studying Swahili.  There were a few hoses that I could find no place to go to, so I put them together, thinking vacuum is vacuum, right?  The engine runs fine, but it seems to be throwing oil, which it didn't do before.  I'm thinking that if I had photos of another motor, with all the hoses going where they're supposed to go, then I could resolve the problem.  Does anybody out there have an 85 CJ7, 4-banger from California that I could go by to make sure I'm connected in all the right places?  Or is there some site I can go to that is more clear about the issue?

The problem is there were many different emissions setups for the CJ's so it's a bit confusing.

I take it there's no diagram on the underside of the hood anymore?

The carb should be a Carter YF / YFA Series 1 Barrel

Wow!  This is huge.  Thanks for all the links.  They seem to still be active, as I've clicked on 4 of them.  The sticker is still there under the hood, but when I try to follow it, I just get confused.  That's why I was looking for photos.  However, this manual you linked looks like it will move me towards a solution.

Since I don't get home 'til after dark, this will be my Saturday project.

I've seen some pictures but most are for the I6 which is different.  Not to mention there is a Pontiac 150cid that was used prior to '84-86.

Alrighty then,  after hours of tracing each and every vacuum line, fitting, and other things I can now say I have everything connected properly, at least as far as vacuum and emissions go.  She purrs like a kitten, and drives well, so something must be right.  Now I need to pick up a smog pump.  The guy I bought the vehicle from said it just passed smog (California), and I was able to register it fine, but how that happened with no smog pump when there is supposed to be one is probably something I don't want to explore.  Hopefully I can find one with the bracket at a junkyard.  From there I'll dive into electrical.  Since my dash lights don't work, and none of the gauges work except the speedo, I should have a chore ahead of me.   I'm lovin' this project.  Just wish the time would hurry up and change so I could come home from work in the daylight and play more.

Eureka!  It's amazing what happens when everything (well, almost everything) is in place.  To make a long story short, I bought a new carburetor.  I was pretty tired of all the coughing, spitting and everything else that goes along with an old carb that needed more than just a rebuild kit.  Stock carb was $170 plus $75 core charge.  Before installing, I removed every single vacuum and vent hose and threw them in the trash, replaced the PCV valve, installed new spark plugs and a new gas filter.  I then installed the new carb and, using the diagram under the hood, re-did every vacuum hose with new hose and new fittings.  It seems the diagram I downloaded that professed to be for my make, model and motor were inaccurate.  I figure the one under the hood is going to be right, even though it's small and hard to read.  I then found, at a Jeep swap meet here in town, a K&N air filter (they don't make an intake system for my motor, just the filter), and an electric fan.  Once everything was installed, I cranked her about 3 or 4 turns, enough to fill the carb with fuel, and she started up fine and runs as smooth as my sweetheart's behind.  I still need to put in the smog pump, which was absent when I bought it.  Still evaluating how I'm going to do that, since the bracket is gone.  It is such a pleasure to drive when everything works properly.  After a short down stint when I had to replace a seriously leaking clutch slave cylinder (a $20 part), I am in heaven.  Now if I could only get a little more horsepower.  The 4-banger is really not up to the 31" tires, but for now I'm good with it.  A little too much play in the gearshift for my comfort, so I'll be pulling the plate off to take a look at how I can tighten things up there.  Then I'll be replacing the entire dash so I can cut new holes for all new gauges and switches, along with a couple of extra ones.  I'm going to eliminate the dash glove box entirely, since I have a locking steel one in the console.

Pulled the gearshift off today, and the female portion of the shifter was so bent that it was causing some serious play in any gear.  Used the vise to put it back in shape, but still had too much play, so I fabricated a sleeve to go inside that effectively eliminates all play.  Now my gearshift is as solid as a Ferrari's.  Sweet!   :doggy:

Now for my next question.  How do I get some more horsepower?  I put on an electric fan and a K&N air filter.  I've seen a lot of posts about a throttle body extender, but I'm guessing that applies to fuel injection.  Will I see any benefit on a carbureted system?  Also, I seem to be using a lot of fuel, in the 9 mpg range.  I can smell fumes when I'm sitting at a stoplight, so maybe it's running too rich, but my understanding is that the control module handles the mixture.  It runs so smooth and nice, I'd hate to mess it up.

Any suggestions would be welcome.
