Oily residue on my intake cone filter
« on: February 21, 2006, 07:05:25 AM »
I am using panty hose as a prefilter and noticed that my prefilter has oil all over it.  Is that normal?

Oily residue on my intake cone filter

Some oil is normal.  Remember the CCV goes from the valve cover to the airbox.  Vaporized oil is able to travel from the head and cools in the vent line.  After a while it will make it's way to the air filter.  When I had my open element setup I would see a runny mess collected at the lowest point of the filter.  When I went back to the box it stopped.  THe vapors are supposed to go back into the intake to be reburned.

Now if there is a lot of oil, you might want to clean out the CCV.  If you find an actual puddle then it could mean there is too much pressure in the engine and oil is being blown out.  This is typically caused by worn or broken rings.
