I suggest getting a 30RH from a boneyard.

Ad for adapters, you could try a 700R4 but it's more then just an adapter.  AW4 would be another option.

that's very steep, shop around

also, look for a second hand one and might consider looking for a rebuilt with core exchange

i also found this one which you'll need to research if it can be used http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Jeep-Cherokee-30RH-A904-Automatic-Transmission-NEW-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem20b93613b6QQitemZ140546282422QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

although is not for the Jeep 4x4 with t-case adapter would be interesting to research if the rear output shaft and housing can be swapped out with yours, transmission is new

EDIT: seems that the only way to swap the output shaft (if it is possible and everything would fit) is to take the transmission apart so not really an easy task (not to mention not knowing if everything is the same) so that's not a good idea although the price is great

What about a 32RH from a 6cyl. Will that work?

I'll be shopping junkyards.

I am watching that ebay one.  Looks like the tail section bolts on.  but I agree might be too much of a hassle.

The tail of an automatic trans is easy to change the output shaft is not it will require disassembly of the entire transmission.

i looked in the transmission manual, the output shaft is assembled with the transmission taken apart unfortunately

dunno if the bellhousing from 30RH bolts onto the 32RH, that's the main issue, then it's the converter (bolt pattern, diameter, etc).

Well, after numerous calls to wrecking yards.
It's going to be $1000 to get a used trans with about 100k on it.
There are 2 in the entire Southeastern US.

If you find one local, there should be no shipping.  I HIGHLY recommend not ordering a transmission out of state.  It doesn't matter how good the warranty is, if you have to ship it back and forth, it will kill you.  Hard to imagine someone charging $800 for one that's been salvaged.  I don't think you ever mentioned the year but try different years as well.

Worse come to worst, you could swap in a manual and still save money.

Maybe its the model year filtering them out?
I didnt get those when I searched.

I didn't think to ask if the torque converter was included?

Well, I adjusted the rear band, and put some Lucas transmission fix in it.  It is much improved! But not cured.  Maybe that will buy me some time untill a reasonably priced tranny pops up close by.
