My little buzzy engine
« on: April 12, 2011, 05:19:26 PM »
First off, I am so glad I got a new phone so I can post and read on here wherever I am. I wanted to ask a question about our engines. I know that 4 cylinders vibrate by nature. Is it normal to feel it at idle and even at speed sometimes. I notice that around 2k rpm I get vibes and then again around 3k. It like a high frequency vibration if that makes since. Its more of a buzzing feeling I guess.  Should I chalk it up as one of those Jeep things, or is it just our little mills?

Thanks,
Joey

check your motor mounts and transmission mount, unless you have poly mounts you shouldn't get any vibration and bad mounts sometimes transfer those thru the frame.

As always your on top of it.

Now with that being said, would it be appropriate to check the mounts with a large prybar?  I was thinking about using it to try and move the engine side to side and the same with the transmission.

I was poking around under there and found that the heatshield over the cat rattles really loud.  I guess I'll take it off tomorrow.

ON my YJ its easy to see if the mounts are bad, they usually tear. The right side mount has an intermediate plate that is prone to rust and cracking it can fail.

If you can have someone re-tack the heat shield its welds break on occasion. If you take it off the floor gets pretty hot at least mine did.
