I used to run 31's and 4.88, and it was almost like having a 4.0L.  When I switched to 33's, it went back to a 4-banger again...  I now wish I had gone with D44's front and rear so that I could go to 5.13's instead of 4.88!
That's kind of funny.  Since I'm running 33's now, I love my 4.56's.  I'm not sure if I could stand going lower actually.  Maybe it's because of the mods or maybe it's because I'm running skinnier tires and have no added width to the Jeep (aerodynamics) but I'm finding 4.56's pretty peppy while still letting me cruse at 70-75mph.

Yes it's worth it to go 4.88's if you have 4.10's.
Maybe not if you have 4.56's + mods.
I'm pretty stock and need all the gearing I can get.

I had no problems with 4.56 and 32's and I really like 4.56's with my skinny 33's and mods.  Although most people and I tend to agree that you might as well go with 4.88's.  I forget what the exact number is but it's something like 4-500 more RPM's then with 4.56's.

Regearing really depends.  You'll spend around $300-400 on parts alone.  Most 4x4 shops will charge anywhere from $1300-1800 for everything.  I'd recommend checking speed shops that work on race cars as opposed to imports.  They typically do gears often and are quick.  You might even be able to haggle a discount if you bring the axles in by themselves.

Still the cheapest is to probably find a club or friend who can do them over lunch and a few bucks.  $75-200 an axle is be a good deal.

So for my '94 Wrangler with AX5 and NP231:
On stock tires 29" (??) and 4.10 gearing I get the same results with 33" and 4.88 gearing ???

Is that correct? Will the car have the same top speed and performance offroad as I now have with my stock 4.10 and 33" or will they really improve?

if stock tires are 29 then the needed gearing for 33 to bring it back to stock final ratio (speed to rpm) is 4.66 (so 4.56 would be closest)
for 28'' would be 4.83 (in this case 4.88 would be the closest one)

i would go 4.88 regardless

I read in a magazine recently that Currie installs Motive Gears in their axles.  That should be a pretty good indication of their quality.
