Regearing curiosity

Quick question... I will be putting 33s on the rig soon and will most likely need to regear. My question is: is it imperative to regear both front and rear?  What would happen if i regeared only the rear?
I may not be able to get anywhere quickly, but I can get most anywhere I please.

You would not be able to shift into 4WD.

and if you do that you'd brake something in the drivetrain.

If anything was going to BREAK it would probably be a U-joint.  The front axle would drag the slower rear axle.

It could work if you put the 33s only on the rear axle and regeared just right.
That's what stadium trucks used to do.  Run 33's up front with 4.10's and 35's in the rears with 4.56's.

Some mud trucks run similar setups so the front floats more.

The front and rear outputs would spin at different speeds. The chain system is not set up for 2 speeds at once. Something would need to give.
Having 2 tire sizes to offset 2 gear ratio's works since it puts everything back to + or - a tolerable amount.

Will it make a difference, yes.  Is it noticeable, yes. is it expensive, yes.  Is it worth it, yes.

Agreed! For a small underpowered motor gearing is a HUGE part of making it work right.

I think its the only way to make it enjoyable to drive if you have 33s or bigger but that's just my opinion

I used to run 31's and 4.88, and it was almost like having a 4.0L.  When I switched to 33's, it went back to a 4-banger again...  I now wish I had gone with D44's front and rear so that I could go to 5.13's instead of 4.88!
