New guy, Looking at a Jeep

Hi all, I am a total jeep noob and have decided I want to get one. I found a used 95 wrangler S with new wide tires, soft top and alloy wheels. It has 58k miles on it which I consider to be fairly old for a vehicle of that age. I have talked the guy down to $5500 which I think is a very fair price. The one thing that I am wondering about is power steering. he says it dosent have it is this true for the 95's? Is power steering really that important?

That would be a great price if that Jeep were close to where I live.  Especially with the "low" miles and if the body/drive train is in good condition.  I'm not sure if all YJ's came with power steering or not but someone here will chime in and let you know.  I suppose it's possible.  If your looking for a daily driver with some occational trail riding you shouldn't miss the lack of power steering to bad.  Now if you start adding larger tires, axles, longer wheelbase, lifts, ect., you'd be more inclined to look for a power steering add-on.  Once you get to that point though, you might be looking to go full hydraulic steering.  But first get the jeep, drive it, enjoy it and then build it up as/if you need.

I just bought a 95 about two weeks ago. I love it so far. It just lacks a little power but with a few mods I learned from the site will help that. After reading this site I have already found so many things I would like to do but I just have to save the money first.  By the way that sounds like a fair price. Also mine has power steering .

i'm not sure about the power steering because I've never seen one without it but it is still very possible.  The price doesn't sound too bad but you better watch for the winter driving vehicles cause they are not usually taken care of.  The fluids may be old or full of water from snow and check everywhere for rust.  Don't be afraid to look at everything and if they don't want you to then that should be a sign.  Any way hope you have fun. let us know if you need help

i have a 1990 yj 4banger and it has powerstering so i would think they wouldnt stop puting it in.. and as far as needing it if you ever get lockers in the front you will definently want it..

Just got back from looking at it, I really liked it! I have a few questions that came up when I was driving it.......



1. The clutch was really short whay I mean by that is its near the top not the floor like I am used to is that normal for jeeps or is that a sign of something?



2. It dosent have power steering should I be worried?



3. The front windshield is cracked (about 6" long only on the outside of the window) how much would it cost to get it repaired.



Other than that I think we are good to go

I have a buddy who  wheels a 1994 wrangler it doesn't have power steering either. he runs 33's and he was a scronny kid till he bought the jeep now his arms have gotten much bigger. he says its not bad on the street but if your going to be crawling over some rocks thats where its a downfall.

Mine's pretty high up,  I rarely push the pedal all the way to the bottom.

2. It dosent have power steering should I be worried?

It would be nice to have it.  Once you get into front lockers and tires over 31" you'll want PS.  It was an Option on all 2.5L's, I believe.

Call around.  I believe when I for my first windshield fixed it was around $125-150.

Here are some other things to consider.  If you want a hardtop, or think you might want one later, it would be better to buy a Jeep with a hard top and full doors then to buy a soft top model and try to locate doors and a top.

1995's are the best of the bunch.  During that time, 4.0L's were becoming scarce and the 2.5L Rio Grande replaced the Sahara at the top of the line.
