I may finally have time this weekend to do it. But I wasnt sure if it will work on the '99. Anyone done it on a '99?
Right now, when my fuel light comes on, I can usually only put 11-12 gals. in it. I would love to have more range.
Thanks

I have the same problem with filling. Do the work, take lots of pics with step-by-step instructions, then let us know how it turns out. I know I'd appreciate it.

It would be nice to know if Im starting with a 19 gal or a 15 gal tank...
-
One of the important things discussed is making sure your tank is actually 19 gallons to start with. If you don't know you can request your build sheet from jeep.com with your vin number.

Here is a link to a TJ writeup
http://bigredheep.com/modules.php?name=ForumNews&id=3934
and some discussions on another board. With a lot of detail links.

My build sheet says I have a 19 gallon. I just don't have enough time to modify mine.
-
Where do you click on the link to get a build sheet?
-
I don't remember exactly how I got there. I went back to see what I did and here is the link to the page I requested it from. I told them in the additional comments that I had just purchased the jeep from a previous owner and wanted my build sheet for my informational reference. My return email looked like this.

This is for YJ's but it sorta applies to TJ's too. http://4bangerjp.com/forums/index.php?topic=10.0
The difference is that there is that the vent is molded to the tank and there is a roll over check valve on the end. Some people have cut the vent off to get 19 gallons.
-
Thanks guys.
I guess my main question or issue is, that I want to be sure Im starting with a 19 gal tank. i would hate to do it only to find out it was a real 15 gal tank to start with...

Jeeps haven't come with an actual 15 gallon tank since 1990.

Thanks Jeffy! Thats what I was looking for. Maybe Ill try to tackle it this weekend. Ill post the results afterwards.
Thanks again

Did the fule tank mod today following this link:
http://bigredheep.com/~jeepwra/forumnews-id-3934.html
Didnt take pics...hands were too greasy for nice camera. Anyway the fuel pump definitely said TJ15 gal. From the pics, I thought the vent tube would be a 'hose', but it isnt. Its a molded plastic tube...like PVC. So, I forgot to get some PVC cutters so I used a small pipe cutter to cut it off. I did NOT cut off the filler/check valve tube, only the smaller vent tube.
Results: I went straight to the gas station and put 19.1 gal in the tank. It was a little lower than I usually let it get before I fill it with about 11 gal. But even if it was 2 gal lower (13 gal low) it still took an easy extra 5-6 gal. Glad I did it...at 18-20 mpg, thats an extra 100 miles of range. Not bad...

As it should. The senders are set to 15 or 19 gallons. The gauge will now read F till you run it down to 15 gallons.
-
Good deal...one less can to carry. It will be nice to see my trip meter pass the 190 mile mark and still have fuel...
Thanks for the help
-
Greasy hands to hold a camera? Your tank is greasy? Should have just dipped them in the gasoline. Did you know its a cleaner?
Cool. So drop the tank. Pull the sending unit. Snip the small tube from the inside. Cut up high and your done?
-
greasy..yeah, evidently had a leaky pinion seal at one time. I did use the gas to clean up afterwards ... just didnt feel like it during the process. Plus, the link had all the pics.
yep, drop tank, pull fuel pump/unit, cut small tube off as high as you can (got mine within 1/2" of the top, put it back together and filler up...
No need to cut the check valve tube. Easy to tell the difference besides the valve...the check valve tube is MUCH bigger...
Well woth it IMO...

E-mail for the build sheet, I just got mine and it specs a 15 gallon tank in a 97. So make sure before you waste your time.! :crap:
-
My 97' build sheet also says 15 gallon.
-
my 2000 says 19 gallon.....fuel light came on while driving to my other office this afternoon...thought I was really low. Filled up with 16.5 gallons...guess I could have gone another 30-35 miles.

As I said before Jeeps have not come with an ACTUAL 15 gallon tank since 1990. This doesn't mean they weren't sold with 15 gallon standard tank. All of the tanks are full size 19 gallon tanks. The sender for the tanks are either set up for 15 gallon or 19 gallons. This means if you have a 15 gallon sender it will read full before the tank is actually full. Jeep is/was too cheap to make separate tanks. Which is why you can do the conversion. It was explained in the YJ Conversion DIY and in the TJ Link.

Glad I read this today. Since I'm waiting on new body mounts the tank is sitting on my workbench, seems like a good 10 minute mod to make.
Edit: Just ran out and did it, don't think I would have wanted to do mine with the tank in. The vent tube was really stuck, required a full 190lbs to pull it out with one foot on the tank ;)

??? Pull it out? I had to CUT mine...
As Jeffy said, my pump/unit had TJ15(gal) marking, but it was an actual 19 gal tank. Before, after a fill-up, I would drive 30-40 miles and the needle would be down to 3/4 tank. Now, Ive driven over 40 miles and needle is still past full....as it should be with the mod...

YJ's you pull out the tube. On TJ's you have to cut them off. That seems to be the only difference.

My 97' build sheet also says 15 gallon.
My '97 build sheet shows a 19 gallon tank. I read in other places that the 19 gallon tank is standard after '97 to reduce production cost. One item less inventory. Cheaper to limit fuel by a couple of hoses. Some posters have said that in '97 the 15 gallon tank did exist and it is stamped somewhere on the tank. The only partially reasonable thing I have heard is that prior to the '97 design there were left over 15 gallon tanks form the previous 1995 model. If what Jeffy said is correct a true 15 gallon tank never existed in the '90+ era
I think what Jeffy is saying would make sense because it would be inefficient to keep different tank designs available for the same body design. Makes sense to just use a cheaper method to limit size. Just sounds stupid to limit it other than marketing reasons.

YJ and TJ tanks are different so there is no way to have carry over tanks in a '97. The 15 gallon tanks used in 1987-1990's were visibly smaller. There would be a gap 6-8" gap on either side of tank to the frame. On true 19/20 gallon tank, the gap is only on the passenger side to allow for the exhaust to sneak part.
So really you're paying more for the privilege to have the gas gauge read correct when full when you buy the 19/20 gallon tank option.
-
question! So before doing this mod your tank can hold 15 or 19 gallons of gas? Like the tank holds about 19 but the gas light goes on after 12? or what?
-
if you read the whole thread + the other thread.. you will read that to cut costs jeep used 1 tank for both there 15 and 19 gallon tanks.. the difference is for the 15 gallon tank they put the vent lower so that the pump (gas pump when filling up)would think it is full when its not... what this mod does is move the vent and filler pipe up higher so you use all the space.
i may be off on some details but thats what i got form it... being that i have a real 15 gallon tank i cant do this :fitz:.
-
Right...
I knew something was up when I could only put 11 gal in when guage indicated 1/8 tank.
Filled it up again tonight at 1/8 tank and it took exactly 16 gal...so I have 5 more gal of capacity "available" now.
-
I did this mod today but I am still in the process of switching axles so I will not be able to fill up and test it out. How long was the piece of hose that you cut off? It was only 5" on my tank and I had read that it would be 8". It was so hard to get the freakin fuel pump back in!!! That was the time killer on the project for me.
-
The piece I cut off was only about 5" as well. I was wondering if it would make a difference, but it does.
Fuel pump went back in OK, but I cussed that bezzle ring a blue streak trying to get it threaded right...
