Does the fuel tank vent tube mod work on the '99?
« on: February 27, 2007, 12:41:40 PM »
I may finally have time this weekend to do it.  But I wasnt sure if it will work on the '99.  Anyone done it on a '99?

Right now, when my fuel light comes on, I can usually only put 11-12 gals. in it.  I would love to have more range.

Thanks

I have the same problem with filling. Do the work, take lots of pics with step-by-step instructions, then let us know how it turns out. I know I'd appreciate it.

One of the important things discussed is making sure your tank is actually 19 gallons to start with.  If you don't know you can request your build sheet from jeep.com with your vin number.

http://www.jeep.com/owners/index.html

Here is a link to a TJ writeup

http://bigredheep.com/modules.php?name=ForumNews&id=3934

and some discussions on another board. With a lot of detail links.
http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=325596&page=2&highlight=increase+tank+gallons

My build sheet says I have a 19 gallon.  I just don't have enough time to modify mine.

I don't remember exactly how I got there.  I went back to see what I did and here is the link to the page I requested it from.  I told them in the additional comments that I had just purchased the jeep from a previous owner and wanted my build sheet for my informational  reference.  My return email looked like this.

This is for YJ's but it sorta applies to TJ's too.  http://4bangerjp.com/forums/index.php?topic=10.0

The difference is that there is that the vent is molded to the tank and there is a roll over check valve on the end.  Some people have cut the vent off to get 19 gallons.

Did the fule tank mod today following this link:

http://bigredheep.com/~jeepwra/forumnews-id-3934.html

Didnt take pics...hands were too greasy for nice camera.  Anyway the fuel pump definitely said TJ15 gal.  From the pics, I thought the vent tube would be a 'hose', but it isnt.  Its a molded plastic tube...like PVC.  So, I forgot to get some PVC cutters so I used a small pipe cutter to cut it off.  I did NOT cut off the filler/check valve tube, only the smaller vent tube.

Results:  I went straight to the gas station and put 19.1 gal in the tank.  It was a little lower than I usually let it get before I fill it with about 11 gal.  But even if it  was 2 gal lower (13 gal low) it still took an easy extra 5-6 gal.  Glad I did it...at 18-20 mpg, thats an extra 100 miles of range.  Not bad...

As it should.  The senders are set to 15 or 19 gallons.  The gauge will now read F till you run it down to 15 gallons.
