Topic: Wheeling a 4 banger with an auto...

I'm mostly talking about the 30RH auto behind the 4 bangers... Anybody that wheels their's ever gotten water in it while wheeling?  I hear they are pretty easy to get water in.  I recently got water in mine but I think it was only because I did something stupid and kinda sank the jeep.  Its all fixed for now but it leaves me wondering is water gonna get into this thing while driving through a shallow creek?  Do you guys think its worth doing the mod of making a new vent hose for it and welding the old vent hole shut?

Length the vent hose and run it up the firewall.  You don't want to weld it shut.  The transmission needs to vent otherwise it will blow seals.

I agree with Jeffy, you don't want to plug the vent hole.  I just want to add that you can also put a bellows on the end of the vent line instead of an open breather.  I'm using the PSC vent bellows PSC-VB01 on my TJ build.  The bellows keeps the water out and still allows the air in the tranny to expand and contract so the seals don't pop.  I'm using the vent bellows for axles and transfer also.

The bellows are a little pricey ($9 each + shipping), but PolyPerformance has sales on a regular basis (10% off and such).  I waited for a sale and bought several at once to get the unit price down.

would be interesting if you can install those at the same level as the seals so if submerged would compensate for the water pressure, only problem is that it might fill with trans fluid in time.

Maybe balloons could be used, or plastic bags.

Just get a T-fitting and tap it into the transfer case breather that goes to the firewall.

"Just get a T-fitting and tap it into the transfer case breather that goes to the firewall." - not a bad idea if both the tranny and transfer are using ATF.  Some transfer cases (e.g., atlas) don't use ATF and you would not want any mixing.  This is possible - my rear axle pukes gear oil out of the vent tube sometimes in cold weather.

Its a 30RH...there is no vent hose...Its vents via a hole in the pump housing behind the Torque converter..

Seems some people have been JB Welding brass fittings to the opening then drilling a hole through the bellhousing.

can it be vented out of the fluid level tube?
