"Just get a T-fitting and tap it into the transfer case breather that goes to the firewall." - not a bad idea if both the tranny and transfer are using ATF. Some transfer cases (e.g., atlas) don't use ATF and you would not want any mixing. This is possible - my rear axle pukes gear oil out of the vent tube sometimes in cold weather.
