What is a decent cost of a D44?
« on: October 12, 2007, 03:07:44 PM »
As I have mentioned in the past, I will most likely be patroling the loacl U-pick yard in search of a '96 Honda Passport or Izusu Rodeo for a rear D44.  I was just wondering what is a fair price to pay for this axle, as I dont want to pay too much for it...

Also, what should I replace (asuming the axle is in decent condition) and what would the estimated cost be for such a repair?

Many Cherokee D44's go for about $450 on eBay.  If you get the Izusu you will need to get a front axle with matching stud pattern.  The Cherokee D44 will have the same pattern you have now.  When I put mine in I also changed the gearing to 4.56 so a master install kit was also purchased.  In addition, I replaced the entire brake mechanism, parts and cyclinders.  Surprisingly I kept the drums and shoes because they were very good.  My costs would be lower than yours because I live in Mexico where labor is cheaper.

It really depends on where you are and what the market is like there.

I spend $150 for my D44 but they are usually in the $300-400 range.

I ended up replacing my brakes almost completely.  I didn't want to guess with unknown shoes and drums.  A Isuzu will have rotors and calipers along with pads.  I'd defiantly replace the pads.  Depending on the mileage, check the rotors.  You won't know about the calipers till you get them hooked up.  Otherwise, you could just replace them with remans, if you're cheap, or new.  Dont' forget rear disc brakes means there are 4 pads and some shoes too.

Expect the rotors to be $40-50, new.  Pads are probably going to run you about as much.  Calipers coule be cheap for reman.  I know the Jeeps reman. are under $20 each so I'd guess as much.  Then you're looking at $25 for perches and $25 for shock mounts.  Might want to get new brakelines as well ($20-30).  Be sure to flush the old gear oil out, inspect the gears and refill.  I wouldn't bother with axles seals or axle bearings till something comes up.  Inspect them none the less though.  You should be able to see the outer seal and tell if it's torn or not.

One more thing,  I had to replace the differential carrier for the 4.56 gears because the diff came with 3.07 gearing.

I paid $100 for my 'zu D44, but they normally run $150 around here if you pull it yourself.  Add about $100 if you have them pull it.

In 2004, I pooched the chrysler rear in my 93 cherokee.  I believe I bent an axle shaft, as I had a mystery annoying vibration that I couldn't cure until ultimately I replaced the axle.  Local junkyard  (Port Murray Auto Parts) wanted 350 for a replacement chrysler 8.25, but could get me a d44 (same ratio) out of an 88 for 175, but it would take two days.

Needless to say, the d44 was a heck of a lot heavier.....

I too replaced the brakes entirely.  Bought a nice flair tool to remake the hopelessly rusted brake lines.  Since it was out of another cherokee, though, I paid roughly $20 for each new) drum and each caliper, and $30 for a set of shoes.  This would obviously be more expensive for a non-jeep swap.

Up in orlando I picked up a cherokee d44 for 200$.  Your best bet would be to check craigslist.  You can usually find a few newer cherokees with the 8.25 being parted pretty cheap.
