In 2004, I pooched the chrysler rear in my 93 cherokee. I believe I bent an axle shaft, as I had a mystery annoying vibration that I couldn't cure until ultimately I replaced the axle. Local junkyard (Port Murray Auto Parts) wanted 350 for a replacement chrysler 8.25, but could get me a d44 (same ratio) out of an 88 for 175, but it would take two days.
Needless to say, the d44 was a heck of a lot heavier.....
I too replaced the brakes entirely. Bought a nice flair tool to remake the hopelessly rusted brake lines. Since it was out of another cherokee, though, I paid roughly $20 for each new) drum and each caliper, and $30 for a set of shoes. This would obviously be more expensive for a non-jeep swap.
