That would definitely be the way to do it, and the hub on the torque converter is a snug fit in the crank?
of nothing binds it has to be one torque producing 2.5 ;)

Nope, and that was probabally the cause.  I've located a cherokee 2.5L crank bushing and I'm looking into what I need to do to get it to fit.

Month later finally got it back together, and it's running good.  Only small problem is that the starter is taking a couple seconds to disenguage - figure that I boogered it up trepeatedly trying to start the jeep after the flexplate let go.

Might be, or I may have messed up the teeth on the starter gear.  It worked fine before the blow up,  I'll have to pull it back off when I get time and see if anything looks out of the ordinary.  Looks like a rebuilt one is only $65 so I may just pick one up and swap it.
