I dunno, been thinking about.  Still have the Instatrunk and I think I'll just go ahead and hold on to it and install it.  My idea about using the aforementioned VDP cover is not really going to do what I need.  

With my top up, tinted windows, I can't really see the behind-the-backseat area too well. The only time it's really exposed is when I take the top off.  

What I think I will do, since I am just looking for a little bass to round out the sound, is just pick up a the higher powered 6inc Bazooka and just mount it on top of the instatrunk.   When warm weather rolls around and I stop in more theft-prone areas, I'll just move the sub from the top of the instatrunk and just put it, still connected, inside the instatrunk for safe keeping (may also see what it sounds like in the trunk, too).  Sound on the 6 inch isn't going to match the 8 or 10 inch, but I need storage and I'm not looking to do much more than just get a little more on the low end.

I said to hell with trying to setup proper sound imaging in the Jeep and just got the intrapod for the trans hump and have two planet audio 5 1/4's in it. I have given up on the factory location and it does ok.



The VDP cover is not metal, it is thick plywood covered in laminate. Metal resonates too badly, although that can be dealt with too. It does not mount to anything but the box and leaves about a 1" gap behind the seat and in front of the tailgate. I picked up some universal weatherstripping from JC Whitney to fix that. The thing I like about the VDP setup is with the amp mounted to the side, I just disconnect the power and ground, take the two bolts out of the floor and lift it out when I go wheelin'. I listen to my Jeep when I wheel, not the radio.

As i said befor down firing is the best option, it forces the sound to deflect off the body before it is dissapated, a tube would be better than front firing but if you put it on top of the instatrunk you may not hear much as it will be aimed at a plastic window. You'll find that the manual from SAS says to point it at a 45 deg angle at the corner of the trunk. If you plan on keeping that instatrunk, have you thought about porting the front of it. Cutting a hole near the bottom about 6" high by the full length of it and placing a regular down firing box inside it? It would be hidden by the rear seat and still be secure. If it's metal you'll want to pick up some dynomat to line it with to stop it from resonating too badly. Line the floor of the trunk, wheel wells and tailgate and I would bet it would do pretty well.

You could try mounting the sub inside the trunk.  It would be a simple test anyway.  I doubt the trunk is sealed perfectly.  Although it might start to rattle.  Otherwise mounting it on the trunk would be an option.  (Still might rattle though.  For the best sound from the bazooka, you want to really mount it so it fires into something that's about 4-6" away so it bounces off the object.  With that small sub you could mount it to the floor behind the front seats too.  If you wanted more bass you could double up the subs.  I'm still partial to the 8" but the 10" is really big.  I've had to install one for a friend and it was pretty easy.  Basically, you bolt a small 'I' shaped base and then strap the sub to that.

Thinking about it some more, it might be interesting to mount some Bazooka Tubbies onto the rollcage.  Another option would be to modify the trunk to accept a couple 8" or a single 10" sub and have it fire through the rear seat.  You'd want to make sure the think is sealed and probably want to dynamat the box.  There are really so many ways to go about doing this.  It's all about personal prefs and how much of a audiophile you are.  Although if you're a real audiophile you wouldn't be using a Jeep.  

You'll probably be fine with whatever is cheaper.

The powered Bazooka sub I was looking at, 6.5 inch 200 watts max, runs about $150 including shipping at Etronics.  Crutchfield was running $230 for the same and is where I bought my receiver and front speakers.  But, I might do an 8" if the price is right, probably $180  or so, at etronics or wherever.

If I mounted the 6 inch on the instatrunk, it'll have maybe 6 inches or so of the interior body to reflect off of - not great but not bad. Personally, I'd like to go smaller, 6" - that size is reviewed ok, especially when its powered at 200w vs the 100w option

I have the instatrunk, but my sub is in my Tuffy console.

The instatrunk has 4 bolts (two on either side)...doubt it would rattle...it's in there pretty tight when installed, but I have found that mine is not waterproof enough.

I think a sub screwed to the back or to the top firing down would be fine, but water always finds a way in where it meets the back...maybe I just need to weather seal a little better (the stuff they sent didn't fill the gap completely).

I love it for the security though.

that might be something I could see doing, maybe some kind of powered sub attached and firing downward
