headlight problem
« on: April 06, 2007, 04:16:09 PM »
I own a 1994 Wrangler, and my headlights would turn off periodically. It was just the headlights, the parking lights and interior lights still were on. Usually if I cycled the headlight switch, they would come back on, but sometimes I would have to do it a few times. It got progressively worse, so I installed a new headlight switch. It seemed to work at first, but last night I hit my headlights, and they did not come on. If I pulled back on the high beams, they would come on as long as I held the dimmer switch back. I looked at the wiring diagrams in the Chilton's manual, and did not see any relays in the chain. The only conclusion I could come to is that the dimmer switch could be bad, seeing as it's the only other thing in the chain between the headlight switch and the headlights.

Does this sound right, and has anyone else had to fix this problem? If you guys can help "shed some light" on this problem, it would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I don't know much about Jeep YJ's but if the dimmer is mounted on the steering column it will have a relais somewhere for low and high beam.

You also might want to check to make sure the harness plug is seated.  It might need to be reseated.  I had a problem with my lights a few years ago.  First I lost my Flash-to-pass, then I lost highbeams for a while then my headlights.  Turned out the harness.

i had my connecter where its conects to the lights itself melt slowly, at first i lost the low beams, had to use highs only till i figured out what was wrong.  autozone conecters splice them in where the original wires where so die elec grease and its good togo

Yeah, when I turn on my headlights, it sounds like there is a relay clicking somewhere behind the dash to the left of the radio, but it doesn't show any relays on the wiring diagram in Chilton's.

I looked at the contacts on the plug that goes to the headlight switch, and they all looked ok.

The Hi/Lo switch that clicks when you turn it on is on the column.  Look for the metal rod that goes into a white box.  You also might want to grab a 94 or 95 FSM from the link in the FAQ area.
