Shim limit?
« on: May 15, 2007, 07:29:41 AM »

Is there a reasonable limit to how much a rear axle can be shimmed safely to change the pinion angle?  Thanks

I wouldn't think so, as long as they are installed correctly.

I run RE 8* steels shims in my rear... i've seen people run 10* and 12* though. Get steel though not aluminum shims. Just make sure the centering pin thingie is long enough to still reach the axle after going through the shim.

Less is always better.  You do NOT want to stack shims.  Keep in mind that shimming will bring the pinion up which could cause oiling problems if you raise it too much.  On the front it will throw off your camber which isn't a good idea.

Thanks for the input.  I was thinking of about 6 degrees so it sounds like it should be fine.  Will be installing a D44 soon in the '95 YJ with no lift for now but will eventually go with a 2.5 inch lift, maybe in about a year.
