Pinoin Preload

Just ran in my rebuilt D44 on jackstands.
The Pinoin seems to be running warm.
According to my specs. I should run 25-45 in. pounds of preload.
I ended up with 32.
Does this sound about right?

Most guy's who run shims for teh pinion preload run then 'goodntight'.  If you're measuring them though, 32 sounds OK since it's between the specs.

What is your backlash measurement?  Running that too tight will result in warm gears.

They call out for .008 - .010 and I wound up with .007 - .010
checking in 3 different places.

Sounds like a lot for preload, I thought 15lb/in for used bearings and 25lb/in for new bearings was about max.  Maybe I'm mistaken.

You want to make sure there is no drag on the axleshafts when checking preload.

35inch/lbs is correct if you check preloadof the pinion and carrier bearings when both are installed.
