Topic: New front bumper and winch

So, since it seems I may be moving to Costa Rica sooner than I expected, I had to get into overdrive doing stuff to my Jeep.  As you can probably remember, I finally got around to mounting the ARB Safari Snorkel, and since the rear bumper was done some months ago, I decided it was time to do the front, so I went ahead and ordered a Hanson Hanson Offroad 52" Winch Guard Front Bumper with the fairlead mount.  I plan to have it Line-X'ed once I get, as I want to protect it as much as I can from humidity...  It will end up being a bit pricey, but the other options simply take too long (the ShrockWorks bumper I planned to buy took 2 moths to make, plus the lining time, it would have been too late for me, as I will be transfering in 2 months!), and I wanted something that I was sure woul dnot rip out from the front of the Jeep when I got pulled...

Also, for decorating the bumper, I ordered one of these:



I have read some good reviews about this Superwinch EPi9.0 winch (including the Moad Jeeper one), and it is a lot less than the Warn...  Granted, the Warn pulls more especially out in the 3rd and 4th layer, but I doubt I'll need THAT much pulling power (and if I do, I can always use a pulley to do a 2 layer pull...).

Anyway, I cant wait for them to arrive!  I feel like a child on Xmas eve!!!

Next is tires and then possible some rocker protection, and I am SET!  (well, as set as any Jeep will truly ever be...)

Some of my wheeling buddies use the es9000 super winch and its an exlelent winch that pulls strong.
We have done a lot of tree and rock pulling with those for trail repairs. Good investment

Sweet  I'm thinking about the Superwinch EPi6.0 when I get back on my feet.  But it might be too wimpy

Hey, guys, I have a question for you; is there any way to wire the winch so that you can run it off a relay or something?  I am thinking it would probably be a good idea to be able to turn the winch off so that if you are parked somewhere, some moron cannot come along an play with your winch while you are eating out/shopping/running errands/etc.  I doubt it is possible (according to the spec sheet, this winch can pull upwards of 350A at 12V, and I really do not know of any relay available for such high loads), but I just thought I'd ask in case it is...

How is someone going to turn it on?  You going to leave the remote plugged in and sitting on the hood?  There is no way to lock your cable either.  If they know how to use the winch they can set it to free spool without even turning it on.  I'd imagine if someone was going to screw around with it you'd probably eventually find some fingers laying under the front bumper.

You can buy relays but they are $$$$ and not really necessary since you don't need a low amp switch going anywhere.  You would need to know the pin-outs or jump the solenoids in which you'd need some know how.  If you wanted to, you can put in a switch between the winch and the battery.  It would be a lot cheaper then a relay.

It's really a non-issue.  You're more likely to have someone steel the whole winch then someone screwing with it.

Always try to Keep It Simple Stupid. More relais and such makes for bigger changes for failure when you need it most. You coulduse constant duty solenoids but the simpler fix would be to interupt the wires to the solenoids in the control box.While you are there hoolking up a set of in cab control switches is not a bad idea. That or move the plug for the remote inside, is where you use it quite often anyway

KISS is also why everyone didn't jump when Warn started making a MOSFET control box.  Two Ford starter solenoids are $5 each and will run under water if need be.

That and any autozone or whatever has those solenoids, also if one quits you can reverse the leads on the motor to do what needs doing
