TJ flares on a YJ
« on: March 25, 2006, 03:10:24 PM »
I got my fronts done friday night.  well saterday morning I had to let the por15 dry.   I decided to use the zip ties..less metal to rust...easy on and off for trtails, cleanup and gretting that god forsaken salt out after snowfalls...plus if I f-up and rub them the ties will hopefully snap before anything else.  If someone can PM there email I can post my after pics you know since I am a computer dunce.

thanks for putting them up.  Sorry I forgot to take them as I went along.  Just thought about it while I was admiring my work.
-
I lost my cool taking off the first flare and just carved it up with a sawsall. There was a rubber rectangular nut that was spinning and causing my frustration.  Needless to say the other side went much smoother.
-
I then cleaned and masked off the area. I trimmed the lip on underside of flair and cut off the +shaped tab that was protruding(razor knife several lght swipes works better then just muscling it through).  Placing the flare agaist the masked area I marked off where I need to cut into the fender.  It seemed I only needed to trim directly above tire.  I cut with a sawsall(make sure to have extra blades b/c after each side the blade bent on me from trying to make turns) someone putting leverage on the fender will help with accuracy due to vibration.  I then grinded edge smooth w/4 1/2grinder(harbor frieght $9.99)
-
Someone held the flare for me while I attempted to mark holes.  Marker was way too long so I grabbed a can of spray paint and lightly sprayed through the holes.  looking at my marks on tape some especially in rear were way too deep into the tub that I wanted to go.  so I drilled new mounting holes closer to the inner edge and remarked.
-
drilled holes tapped with grinder to get any burs
-
pulled off tape and preps for por15.  Then gooped the por15 in all holes and along the sawcut.
_
next morning I ziptied the flares on and I think it came out pretty straight. I definitly gained an inch of room out of the fender.  Cant wait to get to the backs
replacing the flare to w

I don't see any metal cut off?  You installed TJ flares for the looks alone? :?

I didnt get a shot of what I cut off. The flares are covering them at these angles.  I cut about 1" up and across the top of fender about a foot. not visible in these pics. This seemed like the best way to go. After a minor lift(1"BL and AAL) I should have plenty of articulation room for 31s. If I deside to go bigger or figure I need more room it there all I need to do is cut the zip ties and go to town with the sawsall and drill.  The backs will require more cutting to open them up, but now that I did the fronts my confidence is up that I wont screw them up to bad.  I had some minor rust Issues rearing its ugly head between the flares and fender.  So I figured I would gain some clearence in the top of wheel well by using the flares.  I didnt see the point in cutting into the side closest to rear at this time.  If needed it wont be too hard.  But my main point was to get at the start of the rust with the POR15.  I really dont think tj flares look that much better then the stock ones.  I just thought since I am going in there to treat the rust spots. I might as well get a little more vertical clearance.

Oh they're your pictures.

Just curious since the whole purpose of them is to cut the wheelwells.  The rears will give you a lot more room when you move to larger tires.  Fron't don't give you as much.
