How to set up shocks?
« on: March 07, 2006, 08:15:55 PM »
Hi, what's the secret? Is there like a formula or a rule of thumb? Like 65% downstroke, 35%upstroke?

Setting up mostly do forest trails in muddy terrain. No rock crawlin.

About to weld on shock mounts, 3.5inch BDS leaves and corresponding shocks.

thanks in advance

Hi jackhammer, checked out the site and it was just a shock buying guide and some basic info on shocks types.

I already bought the shocks suited for the BDS 3.5inch leaves

What I really want to know is where to locate the shock mounts on the axle tube. This will determine the up stroke and downstroke ratio.

I am thinking more of 6:4 ratio. 60% downstroke and 40% upstroke. but I don't know if this is the right thing to do.

I have not lifted mine yet(only had it 1 mo.), hopefully by June(since Im buying a 4G ring tomorrow...GULP..), I was under the impression that I would have to use stock location unless doing a Spring over axle.

Well, there is no set formula.  What you want to do is flex the suspension.  Then think about where you want your lower hanger.  Preferably you'll want it tucked up and out of the way.  Then measure from that point to the upper mount.  Get a compressed, extended and at rest measurement and go shock hunting.

Most will people have more downstroke then upstroke.  It will depend on measurements and what's available from the manufacturer though.  On a rockcrawler, I've seen as much as 85% downstroke. This only left 3 inches of upstroke.  You don't want the shock to be too short but then you don't want to bottom out either.  Does that help?  Probably not.

Try this...

I need to do this as well - tore one of mine off after the 8.8 install.

I think I may have welded the bottom mount too high for the length shock I had.
