Please note. The 3  Rifles pictured on the vehicle are not part of this auction, they are not offered for sale with the vehicle, nor can they be purchased separately. They are not for sale. They were legally obtained and they have been deactivated they are only shown for display. They will not be included with this vehicle. Please don’t ask because the answer will be no.

1943 VW Schwimmwagon. 4 wheel drive amphibious with rear propeller. The engine is 1100 cc boxer air cooled engine with a 4 speed transmission, it has a rear drive propeller which is used to move the car thru water. The vehicle has 240 kilometers since the restoration,it starts and runs very well.

This vehicle was manufactured by VW and some were also manufactured by Porsche for the German Army during World War 2, it was able to cross rough terrain with the four-wheel drive and high body, it was also able to cross streams, rivers and navigate lakes ,making it a valuable asset to the military. They produced close to 16,000 making it one of the largest production of Amphibious vehicles ever, however almost the total production was destroyed in battle and after the war the allies used them for target practice, now they estimate there are probably less 200 remaining world wide.

This example was found hidden away  in the mountains of France near Switzerland probably left there by the retreating German army, it had been owned by the same person since the early 1950's, it was purchased in the early part of the last decade brought to the US  by a collector who had previously owned one and totally restored to be as correct as possible. Please study the photos contained in this listing carefully to see the detail and quality of the restoration. There are also many additional  very detailed photos located on this link:

http://www.forzamotorsports.com/1943volkswagonschwimmwagon/default.htm

While the vehicle is in spectacular condition from the restoration if you look closely you can see evidence of past use, we are not sure exactly which campaigns this was used in, but it was used and probably survived several battles. These are very rare to find and an important part of Military history. It is unlikely that you will find one as well restored as this example. There are many accoutrements with the vehicle, ammo boxes(no ammo included),paddle, warning sign, mounting tripod for machine gun, these were all sourced out and researched to be as correct as possible.

Just in case you didn't read the first part of the listing here it is again

It IS pretty awesome, and I WOULD prefer it to any Jeep or ford GPW, but with that price tag, I rather pass!  By the way, tires are obviously wrong...

If they're driving it around like a regular car and not a museum piece, I can see why they changed the tires.

Interesting vehicle, with 4 wheel drive.  I thought the German vehicles were mostly 2wd, making them less mobile than the jeep.

The Type 86 Kübelwagen was the first prototype with 4wd, I think.  The Type 87 was the first production vehicle with 4WD.  They were called Kommandeurswagen.  They are also very rare.
