Topic: Anyone running the stock sized tires on their 4 banger??

..........well after 5years of running my 2000 4 banger TJ, i have decided to go back to the stock size tires.  The power loss is frustrating and fairly substantial.  Drove a fellas stock 2001 4 banger and couldn't believe the difference.  I actually forgot as the years went by that the 4 banger moved along decently with the stock tires.  Going to look for a tire with an aggressive all terrain tread and go back to the stock size.   I have 135 k on the engine and want it to last as long as possible.

I am still on stock.  I just got my YJ about 6 weeks ago.  What size tires are you running that are giving you problems?  I was hoping to go to 31s with out much difference since stock is around 29ish

Jackhammer, i am running 31" Procomp All terrains.  They aren't giving me problems its just that 5th gear is non existant and head winds and hills can be frustrating.  I'll be going from a 49 lb tire down to a 26 lb tire.  I do alot of hunting and fishing and have run into situations where the 4 banger doesn't have the jam to spin the mud out of the tires.  For what i do, a good tire with aggressive tread should be fine in the stock size.

I went from stock to 31's and haven't noticed any difference....no hills to speak of here in Western Michigan, but I cruise right along as fast as I really want to go.

...................those 31's are going for sure.  I live in Northern Canada.  West of Edmonton Alberta and 80km's east of the Rockies.

If you don't see larger tires then there is no real reason to get them.

I went from 205's to 32's and that was a big jump.  I still used 5th gear though.  It might not have been as much as I used to but I did use it.  (Stayed like that for 5 years.)  Then I changed gears to 4.56's and regained all of the performance back.  A few months later, I went to 35's and lost it all again.  I can still use 5th gear.

What people forget about 5th gear is that it's not just another gear.  It's an Overdrive.  It's used when you want to cruise and save gas you shift into 5th.  If you want to pass or go up a hill, you'll be back in 4th or 3rd.  You ever see those gearing charts with the RPM's?  What many people don't realize is that chart is for a 1:1 ratio.

As for the Mud, it sounds like you're in 4hi.  If you're in 4lo, you should have plenty of torque to spin the tires.  When you shift into 4hi though, you're splitting the available torque 4 ways rather then 2. Pro-Comp tires aren't that great though.

I went from the stock 28's on my XJ to 31x11.50's, and I did notice quite a difference. I do still use fifth gear a lot on the highway.. or anytime I go over 50mph. I pull a trailer a lot for work, that's definitly too much for fifth gear :roll:   I'd rather regear than spend the money on good all terains. You can have both diff's regeared for under $800 here in Louisiana, I don't know how the prices run elsewhere though. I want 5.38's, but I need to get either a D44 or an 8.8 to put in there though. The chrysler 8.25 only accepts up to 4.56's :evil:

heres my 92 4cyl.  31x11.50, lockers front and rear.  i put on the 31's and i have never touched 5th since.  this little crappy four banger sucks butt.  as for the guy up above that says he doesnt have the "jam to spin the mud out of the tires"  i have no idea what hes talkin about, unless hes in 4 hi.  yes goin up hills im usually in 3rd.  these little motors will live all day long at 3000 rpm, i spin mine all the time to 4000 rpm.  i think you can see by the pics i have plenty of "jam" to spin the super swampers.  there is alot of hills here in honolulu, so yes it sucks.  the 4cyl just doesnt have enough power.  the newer jeeps have plenty of 4 cyl power, cause well the injection is better, they are more effecient, and well jeep took care of some of the complaints of my era no power 4 banger.. that is why i found this website, to see what can be done to the engine to get some pwer back..  there is a post on here about using different ratio rocker arms, that is an awesome idea, that individual is working on finding outif other dodge/chrysler motors use the same rocker... all the fours is 1.6 ratio, a step up to 1.7 ratio would help alot!!

I'm running P235/75R, about 28", on my '95 YJ, seems peppy enough in all gears and is a bit higher than the stock 205 or 215's for that year...I have a set of Wheel Tracs, Firestone's economy all terrains, very aggressive tread, looks kinda like something you'd see on a 50's landrover, very knobby and have shown very little wear at a great price...
