4.56 or 4.88 gears

Should I go with 4.56 or 4.88 gears. My 4.10s handle the 285s I'm running just fine it's just that my ring-pinion-and bearings in my rear axle are damaged and what's the point of building it back if your not going to build it back better? I'm on the highway quite a lot and don't want to max out under 80 but I'd appreciate a bit more grunt up hills. Opinions?

around that size, i'm not sure I'd ever want to go smaller and I'm not going more than a couple inches larger

If you might go bigger, go with the 4.88s.

go with 4.88's. I have run stock size tires with them even and it wasn't bad. loads of of line power :D  surprised a few people lol

Don't waste your time and money with such a small change as 4.56 gears.  Go 4.88, you'll be glad you did.

I have 456 in mine mostly cause one of my axles already had them but I wish I had 488 but ill waIt and go to 513 now when I decide on a front axle conversion, just can't decide what front I want

I have 4.56 and in hind site would have done 4.88's.

I was one of the fools who tried to make a D35 last...
You could not get 4.88's in a D35 back then, now I have a D44.

Are those 285R70's or R75's?  The difference is one's 30.7" while the other is 31.8".  If you're going to go with 33's then go with 4.88's.  If they're 30.7's and you're going to stick with them then, I'm not sure if I'd bother regearing at all.

Also, if you ever wanted to go smaller, you're SOL.

Why not get a Dana 44 or Ford 8.8 and upgrade to 4.88 at the same time?  Then you will really be building it back better.  Sticking with the D35 you are just spending money and building back the same (actually weaker since 4.88 gears are weaker than 4.10).

You can go 80 mph now with 4.10s? Holy shit, I have 4.56 with 31's and the only time I see 80 is if it's a 50% downhill grade with the wind behind me! Of course mine's an automatic with a .69 OD ratio that sucks monkey balls but that's another story.
As for gears . . . I've never read a post on one of these forums where someone said they wished they went with 4.56 instead of 4.88 . . . it's always the other way around. Good luck.

I managed 89 once on the Alvord lakebed with a tail wind and 2 miles of acceleration....
Running 32" highway tires , 4 cyl stock(At the time) and 2 of us in the rig... Hit the Aero wall and it stopped accelerating.

Not going to Bonneville with it except as a spectator.... LOL

I've hit 79 wth 35's shooting down HWy15 to I5 and again coming down from the Grapevine into the central valley.  With so little extra power a swift breeze could drop you 5-7MPH in an instant.  I hated how unstable the Jeep felt though.  it was vert twitchy at that speed and you really had to be on the ball.  I'd rather gear my Jeep for a reasonable 75MPH top end.
