*POLL* To CAI or not to CAI that is the question
« on: April 19, 2012, 09:53:44 PM »
I have been reading and reading and reading MANY different topics on this subject on wrangler forum and jeep forum.  From what I gather most people think they do nothing and can potentially do harm(don't filter as well, oil on MAS).  A few think they work.  On 4bangerjp I am noticing a lot more people are using them.

Please vote and let me know how much/little it helped or how you wouldn't make that mistake again etc...

I say no, its not worth it. Save your money for gas, you'll probably need it.

I did this: http://4bangerjp.com/forums/index.php/topic,3595.0.html and then I installed this: http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=489362 and I bet it is just as good as a CAI. My vote is no. The air hogs are $4.15 clearance at Rockauto.

It's all relative.  The only engine mod on my YJ is the removal of the venturi/air flow restrictor in the intake.  I don't really feel any need for more power.

Put this out there, instead of a CAI how aboutr a snorkle.  Heard it mentioned here several times it would seem to kill two birds with one intake.  Cold air and fording.

I've got a so called cold air intake, its kind of a pain took a while to get the whine out of it.  And its not really a cold air intake a tube with a filter on the end, that draws its air from the engine bay.

PS Air cleaner has been changed its at least twice the size of the one in the Photo.

i assume by MAS you meant MAF, and yes in that case the oil can harm it but the Jeep uses a MAP and that's not the case, it can live with oil in the intake (lots of 2.5s have oil in the airbox from the PCV)

I don't know. I thought it was called the "mass airflow sensor".  I do not know much about jeeps, I've only owned one for a month.

Thanks for the info although as of now I still have no plans for under the hood mods.  I started this poll to get real life feedback on these things because it's definetly a hot debate on other forums but most that are calling them rubbish don't even have them.

yep, MAF sensor = Mass Air-Flow Sensor

the poll is not entirely accurate, like it's been said before by grumpygy his CAI (Cold Air Intake) is more a hot air intake. if you have a true CAI (enclosed and tubed to outside of the engine bay, or properly screened if not enclosed) then it will improve, otherwise a K&N or Airhog filter for your stock airbox is probably cheaper and as effective.

I say it's only worth it if you do it right.  Otherwise, spend your money on something else.

My plan, if the YJ ever becomes a third vehicle, is to reduce the weight.  Plans include:

1) Sell hard top and get a safari top
2) Sell hard doors and get soft doors
3) Remove rear seat and seat belts
4) Remove the carpet
5) Get plastic front fenders
6) Get synthetic winch rope
7) Reduce the width of the front bumper
8. Trim the rear bumper and make large holes in it all over
9) Make holes in the gas tank skid plate in all places that don't actually protect the gas tank
10) Get lighter suspension seats
11) Comp cut the rear fenders
12) Delete rear door, replace with just a single layer of sheet metal welded on and some cross bars to mount the spare

The goal is to reduce the weight by about 500 pounds.  That should provide some improved acceleration!

As long as you don't go over 45mph.  At speed, weight is less of an issue.

aerodynamic effects become a bigger factor and ditching the hardtop for no top or even a soft top increases the aerodynamic drag considerably.

Think it has to do with Aerodynamic vs  the weight.  Over 45 Mph Aerodynamics has more of an affect on your driving.
