Power steering pump upgrade and cooler question...
« on: September 09, 2012, 04:58:02 PM »
My PS pump has been whining for monthssss on end.  I know it's due to be replaced sooner rather than later, so I'm thinking along the lines of something like the PSC pump

http://www.quadratec.com/products/56112_2015.htm

For the price it seems legit. Also, i just put a new radiator in that's equipped with a transmission cooler as well. Since I;m manual, I figure that it would make great use as a cooler for my PS. Only flaw I see is whether or not it would hold up to the pressure of the P/S? On road I don't really see it being an issue- but getting wedged on an obstacle on the trail and having a lot of pressure on the system is what I'm worried about...

Soooo would this possibly work? Or is the only real way to find out to test this out?

Thanks guys  :smokes:

it won't hold up on the pressure side, will explode

but... you put the cooler on the return where the pressure is zero.

So as long as I run it off the return this will work?

He's making a joke.  You don't put a cooler on the high-pressure side anyway.  Using the AT cooler has been done before.

Well I didn't know any better, that's why I asked  I didn't think twice about the pressure.

I did email PSC though just to get some input from them, and they already responded saying it wouldn't be beneficial because it'd actually be heating up the fluid because of the coolant temps being so high?  seems like if it did, then it'd be pointless to even have an a/t tranny plumbed to it?

It all depends on what the normal operating temperatures are.   Maybe the PS is usually cooler than the engine coolant and just overheats with certain types of use and the  automatic transmission is normally hotter than the engine coolant.   Anybody know the normal operating temperatures?

Found this on PS temperatures:  http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=596730

Found this on transmission temperatures:  http://www.digi-panel.com/trannyoil.htm

It's hard to say, it depends on how hot the engine coolant is at the bottom of the radiator...  Just guessing it looks like it would provide almost no cooling under normal conditions but would help when the PS is being used hard (eliminate the extremes).
