Topic: After market coils.

Well I drive a lot and it is 45 miles to work each way. I am looking for just about anything I can do to get better gas mileage. I already take my time getting up to speed and try to slow down at a relaxed pace. I push the clutch in when slowing down as well and try to coast when I can as well. I have some junk in my car and am working on getting it emptied out.

I get right now right about 35-39MPG on te highway in my 97 honda civic. I have straight headers and a short ram intake for air and exhaust flow. Tune up is recent as well. What I am wondering is if an aftermarket coil that is advertised at improvements of up to 10-15% is even worth it. Better burning of the gas and a little HP. Not after the HP since this is just a daily driver but it is an added gain. The coil I am looking at is an Accel super coil and is about the same price as a new coil for my car. The coil fits inside the distributor. I can't find anywhere where people have compared these coils to OEM coils nor can I find the voltage it puts out in comparison to OEM. Do you think this is a goo buy and would this give me what I am after. I know I already get some great gas mileage but I want more if it is possible.

Thanks sharpxmen. I have found it several different places for about the same prices and was mainly wondering if it would be worth it. I assume that bigger sized plug wires would be a good thing as well. I have 7mm right now and would go to an 8 or 8.5mm if I did get the coil.

my opinion: of course higher quality wires would be better but you will pay a pretty penny for those. Since this is listed as direct replacement and there's no mention that it requires different wires you're probably fine with stock ones (which you should get new if they have not been replaced in a while).

Well the stock gap on Jeeps is 0.035"  IIRC.  I'm at 0.065".  The larger spark helps give you a more efficient burn.  The coil and upgraded plug wires does nothing unless you open up the gap.

On Honda civics, the gap is I believe .040 and to go much bugger would be potentially bad for contact with the piston.

Then it's only going to do so much.  If you're limited to 0.040" and you're already there then getting a hotter coil will do little.  Although you could probably shim the spark plug higher up with spark plug indexing washers though I'm not sure how that will work on a honda.

if you add a washer you make the plug hotter, i'd say keep the gap stock.

I read about indexing a few months ago and it is interesting the controvercy behind that! I did some researching today and the majority of sources say that the stock coil is pretty much good to up to 600 hp. I am thinking that is more about hp other than mpg.

That just verifies that you should spend your money elsewhere.

Well for the car, I already have a highflow intake as in short ram intake. For the exhaust I have headers. I also have an upper strut bar to help more rubber stay on the road. Outside of that I have done a tune up is all. Anything elses I can do relatively easy engine wise to help with fuel efficiency? Throttle body spacer?
