Well, I'm back
« on: September 14, 2013, 05:25:39 PM »
Got rid of the YJ a while back and I've been jeepless.  Still going to be effectively jeepless, but I'm buying my daughter a 97 2.5L TJ with a bad auto this week.  She won't be 16 until May so I've got some time to work on it and get it set up right for her.  Only real plans are a trans rebuild, bigger throttle body, aluminum rims and some paint repair.

Wasn't using it and I had really built it so much that for the local trails it made it too easy.  Wound up trading most of it for a 98 GC for my 16 year old son.  Some day I'll build another jeep for me, but it'll likely be a stockish Willys.

That seems to be pretty common.  One of my friends drives a stock 2.5L YJ and enjoys it for what it is.  No plans to build it up.

Picked  it up this morning. I was going to hide it from her, but she saw it

The body is in pretty decent shape. Transmission was known to be wonky, but oddly enough it seems to have fixed itself. Seems like the 1st reverse piston or its circuit was clogged/jammed. A couple redline back and forths seem to have kicked out whatever was causing the problem because it suddenly lurched to life when I was putting it in the shop. I'll still rebuild it since all the slipping can't have been good for the clutches.

Passenger door needs a new lower hinge, it was bent pretty badly which was not allowing the door to open. Looks like someone tried to remove the door with a floor jack.

Steering box leaks, I'll probably just stick in a reman.

And lastly I'm planning on swapping in an NP242

Other than that just all the normal maint stuff will get done and it'll get some nice wheels/tires and top. Should be no problem getting it ready by spring for her.

Man what a nice body! Lol the jeep.

That's pretty cool of you to do that... is she going to help in the shop fix it up?

She'll help on it some.  The body of the jeep is pretty good, needs a pair of fenders though.  One of them is munched and the other has some rust holes in it.  Other than that there is a little surface rust on the leading edge of the hood.

Although the top looks good in the picture, it is complete rotted junk.

A topless Jeep tends to make high school students who own them more popular...  At least it did in my days (many MANY years ago!).  Hope she enjoys it!

Actually, my Jeep was used in the homecoming parade.  :wall:  It's also in my yearbook.

Got a few things done on it thanks to craigslist.   Picked up a complete 02 TJ sound system with sound bar (there was no radio and one of the dash speakers was blown).  Got that all in after some minor hacking to get the dash speakers to fit.  Still need to find a harness for the sound bar.  Wound up with a free 5 finger death punch CD as a bonus.  Also picked up a decent set of alloy wheels off of a Cherokee.  Grand total for the wheels and sound stuff $240.  I'm used to paying that for one tire.

Looks better already, but the trans is definitely junk.  Took it for a drive and after about 2 miles it started slipping like crazy.
