« on: October 18, 2013, 08:30:19 AM »
My best friend has a rolled (edit) 2005, Xterra with VQ40, 4 wheel drive

- has anyone heard of using that motor/transmission/xfer case and driveshafts and doing a swap into a YJ?

Yes, here's how:

1) Sell the Xterra drivetrain
2) Buy a Chevy K20 with the proceeds
3) Swap in the Chevy components using readiliy available adapters and parts

FYI: Seeger Weiss (law firm) is investigating claims for a class action lawsuit for defective VQ40 engines in the 2005-2010 Pathfinder, Xterra, and Frontier.

The VQ40 engine contains a primary timing chain and two secondary timing chains. The timing chains can degrade prematurely causing their protective surfaces to wear. This defect can cause engine failure, even while the vehicle is in operation, resulting in serious injury or even death.  :yikes:

I haven't heard of anyone doing it BUT anything is possible if you have fabrication skills.

One combo that I have been considering is the 300ci Ford straight six. Dump truck loads of torque and horse power but still easy to find parts and to work on. I have been passively looking for a '95 Bronco with correct configuration. If one lands in my lap I may have to do the deed.

The length might be a problem.  I think it's a few inches longer.

Brake Horsepower: 150 @ 3400 rpm
Torque: 260 lbs.-ft. @ 2000 rpm
MPG; 14/17

For comparison, an AMC 258:

Horsepower: 150 @ 3800 rpm
Torque: 240 lbs.-ft. @ 1800rpm

I bet you'd have more luck with a F-150 as they are a lot more common and the least sought after.

If you decide to go F-150, look for a 1976-1977, as they have the desirable high pinion drivers drop front D44 with disc brakes.  Some Fords have divorced transfer cases, and that's why I lean toward the Chevy. Look for a Ford with NP205 transfer (beefy).
