What would be a fair asking price?
« on: October 02, 2014, 06:09:25 PM »
Hey, guys.  I am considering selling the Jeep as part of my preparations to moving once again to CR (by the way, this includes facing the fact come January, I will no longer be working for Sony).  To be honest, I am not nearly using the Jeep as much as I used to (very little time anymore, and things will only get more complicated in the near future!), and there is a pretty penny already in there that I would rather use for other things at this time in my life...  Maybe in a not so distant future, I will get to buy another Jeep, but for now, I think it will go (I also cannot afford to import it to Costa Rica, as that is about $16K that I will not have in cash at this time after all the expenses I have to make, which include the move and the purchase of a new house).  For those following my other post, I WILL change out the bearings and the bushings (already ordered those), but not the shocks.

So, the question is, to have an idea, what would a fair price be in your neck of the woods (I will try to convert that to a local price).  For your reference, the Jeep ('94 Jeep Wrangler S - 2.5L YJ) would include the following mods:

VDP Center console
K&N Filter
TJ style wipers (WiperBoy from RipTech)
Borla SS Cat Back
Corrected speedo gear
Fire extinguisher
KC Daylighters in hood hinge mounts
Sony stereo with Bluetooth (Sony 6X9 speakers in SoundBoxes in the rear, Sony 5 1/4 speakers in ModPods up front, installed amp under the driver seat, and Sony aluminum subwoofer in the rear)
Pavement Ends Targa Hard Top
H4 Delta Xenon lights headlights
Mustang Injectors (Bosch, 19#)
FoMoCo e-fan with relay connected to low speed (Flex-a-Lite control box available but not yet installed to high-speed)
All matching OTRATTW rocker switches (including ARB lockers)
Interior LED lighting (2 underdash, one rear light on the overhead console) conected to OEM controls
Tuffy overhead console with 2 compartments for the comm radios
Uniden Bearcat CB with SSB, and Firestick Firefly antenna (with quick disconnect) on over-the-tail-light antenna mount
Icom IC-V8000 2m radio with 6dB antenna on over-the-tail-light antenna mount
Rubicon Express 4" lift with Deutchtech DT3000 shocks
BFG MT KM2 33 x 12.5 tires on American Racing Outlaw 2 wheels
PORC SYE kit
Tom Woods front and rear DS
Hanson Offroad 52" Rubicon bumper with winch guard (Line-X'ed)
KC Slimlight FogLights mounted on bumper
Superwinch EPi9.0 winch
Griffin aluminum radiator, radiator cap with temp gauge, BRX radiator hoses, Robert Shaw thermostat
Tire plug kit
Crown 5-layer brake lines
Hawk LTS front brake pads
Currie boomerang shackles
62mm TB with 62mm TB spacer
Loadboss 165A alternator
ARB differential covers for both axles
G2 alloy axles with 30 splines for both axles with 4.88 gears
ARB Airlockers with compressor
Performance Distributors ignition system (Cap, Rotor, LiveWires, Screaming Demon Coil)
JKS Telescopic trackbar
Cruise Control (does not always work)
Hydroboost
Additional Vacuum Reservoirs for the HVAC system
Yella Terra Rocker Rollers
Rugged Ridge Heavy Duty Tie Rod link kit
JCR Offroad Stage 2 rear bumper
ARB Safari Snorkel
Brown Dog Industry motor mounts, cradle and engine brackets (rubber)
40" Hi-Lift Classic
Warn Steering Skidplate
Replaced all rocker switches (including the ARB rocker; kept the switch body) with OTRATTW switches
Daystar Poly bump stops
Mopar High Performance Camshaft and Tappets
A to Z Fab Rocker Guards (line-X'ed)
Tough Stuff rocker guard paint protector
JCR Offroad read bumper
IPF Backup light mounted on rear bumper
Bestop Oversize Tire Carrier
Rhino lined interior
New carpet and seat covers
Hand throttle
Over rear wheelwell saddle boxes
Tree protector, tow strap, bungee strap, ARB snatch block
Machete and shovel
Oddyssey battery with military style connectors

Jesus, I have done a LOT to this Jeep!  It hurts to have to let it go, but such is life...  Anyway, I appreciate your help!

Felipe, just curious, how many miles on the powertrain (engine and transmission)?

One way to price your Jeep (which is far from stock config.) is to add up all the cost of the parts and then decide what fraction of that total you are willing to take.

You can also look on e-bay at the completed listings for a rough idea (assuming you can find something similar).

Here's an example from e-bay - lifted 94 with a 4.0, lifted, rubbered, winch... asking $7K  Maybe...

Here's a 1995 4 banger that sold for $9K:

I would think yours would sell for at least $10K in the US with all the goodies you have added (plus it has a 4 banger!)  I don't know how to adjust price for Panama.

Wouldn't it depend on just where exactly you plan on selling it? Back home, they are a bit more popular so that may lower the price. Where you currently live, it may be more of a rarity and you could demand a higher price, but you may also have to consider the next owner may not have the availability of parts and therefor may not be too comfortable paying too high a price.

I was thinking about $10K locally.  Cars here are usually 10% or so above US price, but there are not that many lifted and prepared Jeeps, much less when you consider the condition my Jeep is in...

Problem with looking at US prices is that the market is very soft right now.  With tariffs and such, it could spoil a deal.  Thought, there's also the exclusivity that comes with owning a Jeep down there.  $6-8K sounds about right for a nice clean built Jeep if you can get it.  10K's on the high side.  Though much more built up and no one will buy it.  Trail Jeeps are worth more as parts then a running vehicle.

If I lived down there I'd probably have a Toyota FJ78.

Surprisingly, there are not that many Toy's in Panama.  In CR they were quite common, but not here for some reason...  $8K there would roughly translate to $9K here, so $10K would probably be a good starting price.

What's common down there?  Kia's and Daihatsu's?  Suzuki's and Mitsubishi's are probably common.  I hate to see the Jeep go but I can fully understand why.

Samurai's, Jeeps, Newer toyotas (including but not limited to the FJ Cruiser, and LOTS of HiLux), Nissan (Patrol and Navara).  Mitsubishi is common as a car, but I have yet to see one built up...  As I mentioned, the older FJ's were common in CR, but not so much in Panama...

Regarding the Jeep, it breaks my heart to let my baby go, but what I want and what I should do are not aligned at this time in my life...  So I have to play grown up for a little while!  I'll still troll around here, though.

I'm thinking about doing the same with mine this Spring.  I want to ask $10k only because of the add-ons that could easily be parted out for a lot of money.... axles, armor, seats, headlights, etc.

I'm not going to hold too much on price as I understand that the real value has absolutely nothing to do with what I paid for parts over the past couple of years.

I'm getting fast car fever and simply don't have the room to keep all of the cars I have.  The mileage and 80 mile daily commute might also have something to do with it....

That's the biggest problem with built up Jeeps.  Once you get then past 35's they generally become money pits and you'll never get your money back unless you part them out.  And even then it could take a while.  That is unless you're selling something for half of what it's really worth.

Funny thing is something more closer to stock will probably sell faster and make more money.

Did you ever get to wheel that beast?

Just two tracking.... was looking on eBay last night for a new car.  Want to pick up an Audi S5 at Xmas (2010 or 2011) and if I still have the Jeep in the Spring, I may take it out for one last thrashing before I let it go.

in your case (your jeep and location) I would def not go below $10k, hell, you have about $3 G's in the axles alone (if not more).
