A tuner would be nice.  You can sometimes get a CB shop to do this for free other just buy a cheap one from Radio Shack for $20.

was at Radio Skack earlier and asked about one.  The guy said they don't carry any CB stuff there, but I was welcome to check out radioshack.com on there web kiosk to find one.  Found only one on there that they carry and it was $35.....guy looked at the picture, turned around and there was one on the shelf.

I'll get it installed and then see if one of my club members has one to help me tune.  Thanks.

CB's are great!  I advocate them, promote them and think anybody going 4wheeling or trail riding needs to have one.  The more power the better.

But....

I also think that a GRMS radio is, ummm, better.  Here's my reasons:
Better range
portable
more channels
less expensive
no wiring, no antenna

Get them both!  Get a CB and get a couple hand held GRMS radios...  I own two really good Motorola's and I bought a 4 pack of some cheapy, cheapies...  I've gone with quite a few different groups and levels of 4 wheelers and you'd be surprised how many people don't have 2-way communications.  Well I always bring extra's along, and it's amazing how much fun it is to wheel with communication.

Yeah...planning on the radios as well (at least can be used by the kids)....BUT, my club promotes CB as we can all tune to one channel for our rides....and I do think the antnnae can look kind of cool on Jeeps.

Did a little web search last night as I like the Firestik and they have a hood mount (with all of the cords included):

But I kind of like the idea of having it come off of the tail light with this bracket:

Anyone use either of these methods??  Positives/negatives??  Thanks.

I've use the Firestik hood mount  for over 2 years now and it works great, just make sure you tune it or receiption will suck ... I use to run one that was attached by the tailgate until I broke two antennas off at the base on the trails. Couldn't tell ya why I haven't broken the firestik because it sticks out farther on the side and it catches more tree limbs, but it's still there. It does have a slight lean backwards to it, but you have to be looking to tell.

Well, you won't get more range out of a FRS.  It's basically line of sight.  GRMS requires a license to use.  Personally, I'd rather huse my 2M Ham radio over GRMS.  At 5w, I can talk to people over a mountain about 20 miles away.  Bump it up to 25w and that goes to 50 miles.  Push that to the highest setting 50w and I can hit stations 100 miles away.  Then if I hit a repeater, that'll add 200 miles.  My antenna's around 3db gain.

As for FRS's, they're good for kids and those times when you go to Amusement parks or other busy area's.  I wouldn't bet my life on one but they're nice to have around.  I picked up a cheap set ($6) of Motorolla's just because they were cheap and I don't have a FRS.  Although my old Tri-band Amature band HT could pick it up.

As for CB, mount it where ever you can.  The hood would be good but then you'd have a bias towards the rear if I remember right.  Rear mount would be strongest towards the front.  This is because of the ground plain.  I suggest getting the mount first then getting the antenna.  This will make sure the antenna isn't too tall or short.  You can the antenna slightly taller then the highest part of your Jeep.  This is so that it doesn't get snagged on everything.

As for antenna's I like the K40 line over the Firesticks.  I find the firesticks are too stuff and end up breaking on stuff even with a spring mount.  My K40 can be bent over itself and not break.  I've ground the tip off a bit from underground parking garages.

If anything remember that your radio is only as good as the antenna.  More power won't mean squat with a poor antenna.

Looks like Firestick either bougth the rights or made their own mounts.  I've seen those before but form other companies.

Looks like they have my whip too...

Unless you happen to have more then one antenna in the back. 4' on the spare tire carrier would be really long.  I'd even say too long.  Like I said optimal is probably just taller then the Jeep.  Any more and it will get caught on stuff and whip around.

Okay Jeffy, you've convinced me....going with the 3 ft. version of your antenna (should stick up no more than 6 inches above the Jeep) installed on the driver side tail light.  Hopefully it will arrive by Friday so I can install this weekend....WOOT!

I think you'll be happy.

I have a 4ft where my tire stop used to be and my antenna stands about 6" over the top if my Jeep. (8" over the highest part of the rollbar)  It's not as bad as my 2M antenna though.  That antenna is 48" and sits above my rear lights.  It hits everything.

Currently I fold both antenna's under my rear wiper so they don't hit anything.  Backing into the garage with the *clank*thwap*clank* is a bit annoying.
