rebuild my transfer case or replace with the atlas
« on: May 26, 2016, 09:45:26 PM »
im trying to decide whether its worth it to rebuild my transfer case or replace with the atlas.  if money wasn't an object the decision would be easy.  what is your verdict?  worth the extra cost?  is it quiet at highway speeds compared to the 231?

If money's an issue just rebuild the 231.  They're easy to rebuild.  If you're replacing the chain then you might want to go with a 1.25" chain and the wider sprockets.

money is def. a concern.  however, after tearing into my 231 today i believe it is going to need a major rebuild basically everything but the case needs replaced.  my oil pump screen was completely plugged with metal and brass pieces and its everywhere inside.  it would seem to me that the cost to do this would put at least a small dent in the price of a new atlas and i would be gaining some cool features.  has anyone regretted spending the extra money on the altas?

Well, you should be able to buy a salvage 231 for $350-500.  Check www.Craigslist.org and see if there are any local to you.  You can also get a new 231 HD with a SYE or SS SYE for $1,499.00.  You'd need a new rear driveshaft though.  But that includes the wider chain and sprockets as well as the 6 gear planetary.  Keep in mind that an Atlas will require you to get two new driveshafts as well.  $2,360 +700.  With that said, if you have the money, then get the Atlas.

sorry for the delayed response but i have been going back and forth on what to do this entire time.  i just ordered the atlas!  my wife has been telling me to just order it for the last couple months and i finally came around.  we plan on keeping this jeep for a long time and love the fact that its a 4banger with square headlights!  seems like a perfect candidate for the atlas to me.  we use it on the trails a ton and i think the durability combined with gearing options put me over the top.  i will try and report back once i get it installed.

Sounds great.  What gearing did you get?

i went with the lowest gear choice.  i wasn't sure the 10.34 would be low enough   i also think i may have got one of the last made this way since they no longer advertise it on their website.

Very nice!  I have the 2.72 and 4.3 option.  Too bad if they no longer make it, 4.3 is better than 3.8 for the 4 banger.
