For a TJ, it's a bit more involved.  The vent tube is molded into the tank.

This is in the plans in the near future as I need to replace all the rubber around my tank.  I have slight leakage when cornering and get a strong gas smell.  Going to replace the sending unit and the pump when I have everything down.

I did it to my 93 YJ I get between 21-22 gallons filled to brim. I had to change out the fuel pump so I just pulled the tube while I had the tank dropped.

I did it YEARS ago (2008?) on my 94 YJ.  Meter would read full for a while, and then drop quickly.  I know when it read 1/2, it was really 1/4 tank.  When my pump started acting up, I replaced the sending unit, so I could have an accurate gauge.  A few weeks ago, I had to replace the tank (hit something in the trail and broke mine), and it already left the tube out.

I just bought a 19 gallon tank. Heard sticking your hand in the tank to cut the tube isn't bad though

Yeah, stock TJ tank from a 6 cylinder. found a guy on facebook marketplace selling one. Same tank just no vent tube.
