PLEASE HELP ME !!!!!
« on: May 08, 2006, 06:06:11 PM »
i have a 2005 tj  the other day i went to upgrade my blinker light with some led replacements.i pluged in one side and turned them on to see what they were going to  look like. when i turned on the lights it popped a 20 amp fuse in the fuse block behind the glove box. so i did a very bone head thing and stuck a 25 amp in place of the blown 20 amp, and turned it back on. nothing happen the new blinker bulb still didnt come on, and now i have no hazzards, no blinkers or brake lights. my fog lamps up front still come on when i turn my lights on and so do the flush mount led taillights in the rear, but my blinkers dont blink and my brake lights dont come one when i push the brake. my first thought was another fuse. that wasn't the problem. i put a 20 amp back in, went down to auto zone and replaced the flasher thats inside the steering column, and checked the grounds on the taillights and they have to  be good because i still have running lights, just no brake lights. i am stumpped gents, my only thought  is maybe the switch lever on the side of the column, but how often do those really go out? please if you have any advise  let me know, this problem is eating away at my contious, and im loosing sleep over it!!!!!!  :x

You can start by checking your other fuses. Also check the ones under the hood.. if they still have the relay box on the 05's.. :?  I have no idea why they would have blown in the first place though, sorry

I can't understand why it happened either.  Not an electrician, but if it overloaded the fuse, isn't there a chance that the wiring was damaged somewhere down the line??

I mean, this shouldn't have happened in the first place, so maybe the problem is further down the line...exposed wire??

First things first:

1.  Was your LED replacement the entire light housing or just the bulb?

2.  Did you put your original back in before you put in the 25?

3.  Do you have access to a multimeter?

Try this:

1.  If it is just a bulb and you have two, try the other one.  You could have an internal short to ground on the brake/blinker side of the new led.

2.  If it is a complete housing, take it back apart and see that you are not pinching one of the leads.

3.  If you have access to a multimeter, set it to ohms and read each of the connector pins with one lead on ground/frame and the other on one pin at a time.  If you do read the short, post what color wire it was and which connector and I'll let you know more.

Good luck and let me know how it turns out.

Jim

the led replacement i  was going to  put in was just a replacement bulb for my front blinkers the ones on the front of the fenders. yes i  put the 20 amp fuse back  in  the block after i  took  the 25 amp out. i also  put the stock bulbs back in the blinkers after the led's didnt work. i went back to  the taillights  and tested my brake/turn signal wire behind the light and i  was only getting 0.3 volts to it. so  its somewhere farther up. yes i  could of burned a wire somewhere but i  only turned the lights on for about 5-10 seconds before i  turned it off and it would take a little more time for the wire to  get hot enough to  burn through the insulation, atleast thats my opinion. this is really a frustrating problem. thanks for the help please keep the ideas coming

This will seem like an odd request, without the key in, open the passenger door and turn on the parking lights.  Do you get the warning buzzer (This may not apply to 2005, did it used to?).

Have you tried removing the bulb from the one you replaced and tried it without anything in there.  Does this change anything?

Do your headlights work?

when you open my pass side door with the key in it will beep 5-6 times then stop. im not sure with the lights on i have never tried that, yes my headlights work fine the 4 blinkers/running lights up front and my taillights work!!! i took it into the dealer and pleaded with them telling them that the flush mount led taillights i put in was not the problem and should not void the warranty. they finally took it in so i would stop yelling and they are going to let me know the cause tomorro, i'll let you all know what the problem was. thank you for all your input and ideas, its that kind of help and common curtesy that makes owning a jeep a way of life, not just a way to get around. SEMPER FI!!!!

I'm impressed that they took it on.  Must be a good dealership.  That is the kind of service that will keep you coming back.

By the way, thank you for what your doing or will do for us all "Jarhead".

Legally they shouldn't have any problems looking at it.  Although if they find it was bad wiring on the LED, then they won't have to flip the bill.  That's good that they'll look at it though.  Not all Dealerships do this.  Many/most don't.

First off, thanks for all your ideas and advise second  there is no  need to  thank mefor what  i do, i  love this country and i  love defending it, its an honor to  put on the uniform everyday. It was the multifunction switch fuse. thats the fuse that  controls the lever on the left side of the column for your headlights, dome lights, and all that good stuff. it still makes no  sence to  me why  did all my other lights that the lever controls still work  except my blinkers? ohh well who  cares my jeep is back in buisness. don't get to warm and fuzzy about the dealer i sat on the phone and argued with them that the leds in the rear had nothing to do with blowing that fuse, and it took me showing up in uniform fuming for them to wave the 89.59 they wanted to charge me for a fuse (you never want a pissed off marine on your hands), but you are right it was honorable of them to  take it in  and yes if they  could honestly prove my tailights caused it i  would of payed the bill, but even the tech  said that  he couldn't say  for sure if the tailights caused it, and in my book  they need to prove to me beyond a reasonable doubt, if im going to pay for their services.
                    thanks again!! happy jeep'n 8)  :D
