Serp Belt Chirp

Ok guys, I've got a 1994 4 banger and the serp belt squeals when I start the engine up.  I've tried numerous times to adjust the belt tightness at the power steering pump.  Any helpful hints?  What's the trick to getting it so it won't chirp back at me when I start it up?

Thanks,

Just tighten it.  There are 5 15mm bolts you have to deal with.   Two on the back of the PS pump,  one on the front, a lock nut and then the adjuster.  It should have about a inch of deflection, I believe.  Or just tighten it till it stops.  I've got to do this again too.  Mine squeals since I did the motor mounts.

Thanks Jeffy.  I spent a couple hours trying to tighten up the belt over the weekend.  Now I've got a good understanding of the bolts to loosen and how the power steering pump rotates/slides in the bracket.  I basically used a large screwdriver to pull the pump away from the engine to get the belt tight.  Then I quickly tightened it up.  Chirp is now gone.  I'm happy to say that I should be able to fix this from recurring now that I understand how to adjust it.  That lower bolt on the back of the pump is a bear to get at.  I removed the rubber air intake hose from the airbox to get more space to work on it!

Yup, mine squeals too since I had to do the engine mounts.  Been too busy to get to it.

Ok, I got off my duff and fixed it.  Took a whole 15 minutes and it's 13mm not 15mm.

I'm glad I've inspired you guys!  Long live the 4banger Wranglers!

I love my Jeep, except when it's going up a steep hill.
