Brokeback Visors
« on: June 06, 2006, 11:29:04 PM »
Anyone else have broken visors?  I don't mean that they don't work but the flappy part well,....flaps?  I decided to fix this problem.  I started to take mine apart.  Turns out the flappy part is made of stiff paper.  It's stapled to a bracket of all things.  Hopefully, I'll get it fixed and put back together in a few day's.

Don't really use mine...except to hold my sunglasses clip, remote controls for the garages, LED light, etc.

I'm usually wearing sunglasses to prevent my contacts from drying out anyway...never been a big fan of visors...couldn't tell you why.

I usually sit high enough that I don't need the visors but there are times when the sun it slow on the horizon and it's just a pain in the ass to see.  TJ visors are better then the YJ/CJ visors since you can swing them outwards.

Basically all the YJ visor does is swing down.  Well, here's how it usually goes.  The sun's blazing and you can't see so you go to move the visor down.   It's usually a bit tough so you use a bit mroe force then *pop*.  Instead of lowering the visor you end up breaking it in half.

After taking the visor apart, I can see how cheaply they are made.  They're really cheap.  Just cardboard, some bent over sheet metal some vinyl and a couple J rods. The strip of metal has a loop bent into it that holds the rods.  That's it.  No fancy hinge.  Oh and the cardboard is stapled to the sheet metal.

I'm going to have to figure out how to reattach them since I douby a swingline will work.     I'm thinking stainless steel pop-rivits and gorilla glue.

Well, I got the visors cut and one is reskinned.  I have to redo the tab part on one to see if I can make it look cleaner.  The main part looks rather OEM.  I had to hand stitch it. :?   I doubt anyone else will want to try this.  Although it sure beats the price for replacements.  They are beafy to say the least.

Well, they're in and they work a hell of a lot better then the stockers ever did.  They don't look half bad either.
