Topic: Every considered buying Military Surplus Chevy Diesels?

My cart is kind of ahead of my horse on this one.  It's not going to fit in my budget for the time being  :cry: :

$ 500   Flight to San Francisco, French Camp, taxi, gas/food back
$ 1500 Vehicle doesn't run -- tow job back to LA, flight back down!   :evil:
$ 5000 Likely Repairs, parts replacements, etc
$ 2000 Dual Tank bio-diesel conversion
$ 500 Time money spent on licensing, etc.
$ 1000 Annual Insurance

It could run as little as $3000 immediate cost if its in perfect condition (not likely, since rated F7), drivable and I don't do a biodiesel conversion on it right away. But, may likely be closer to $12000+ when all is said and done -- probably somewhere in between $3,000 and $10,000, then tack on $2000 for the VO conversion.  

If I want biodiesel, I might should just go to www.lovecraftbiofuels.com and buy a converted 80's era Mercedes for around $8000 and get a sure thing   Leave the trails to my 4Banger.

Nah.  Think I am paying $950 a year for my '94 4Banger with Progressive.  Its covering comprehensive and collision and is not a custom policy which would underwrite my mods, also.  $500 deductible, too.  I can probably do a lot better with Mercury insurance or some place else.  

I'm out of my teens and 20s and haven't had any tickets, probably since 1997 (?)   Had a series of suspended licenses in the 1990's because I was young, dumb, way too busy and kept letting my insurance lapse.  So, that's a really good question -- Why am I paying so much for car insurance?  No accidents, either (knock on wood)

The CUCV I linked to apparently went for $1200 + a 10% buyer premium.  So looking at $1320 (and Cal tax of some kind?).  So probably $1500 estimate is not too far off.  

Still probably be a lot of fun as a project vehicle you work on for a few years to get it where you want it -- ultimately put $12000 in to it, but stretch it out over 3 years or so.  Reminds me of my 4Banger  

Yeah, though, the CUCV pickup would be real nice.  Good luck finding one you don't have 20 guys in So Cal/Arizona bidding on, right?

Wow, that sucks.  I have just have basic insurance on the Jeep.  I think mine's only around $200 a year.  Collision would probably bump that to $300-400.  Although in Hawaii, I was paying something like $600 a year.  Now if I got a degree in a hard science, I could of had my insurence below $150.

You'll get a discount on the CUCV since it's old and if you get a Blazer it will be considered a SUV.  You get hit with higher rates for the truck since it can be used as a work truck.  Put a cap on it and then it can be called a SUV.  You might want to call your insurence and see how much more it will cost to own one.

I had been looking at a bunch of different vehicles, basically.  Anything with decent alternative fuel potential, biodiesel or electric.

-and even these Electric Minivans they use on air bases -- scared me off a bit due to battery replacement on a 7 year old electric minivan (was under the impression those batteries had a six year lifespan).  Don't laugh, there are electric car recharge outlets all over L.A. leftover from the 90s    Course these E-van things ended up going for 7k+, well out of my price range for a project vehicle.

Anyway the two CUCVs I was looking at went for $1200 and $1700.  The two 6x6s went for around $1500 and $2500.  Anyway, if you live near those military bases in California and are a decent mechanic with a garage, those 6x6s and CUCVs on another auction might offer some fairly cheap fun potential, Biodiesel or no. I'd probably have trouble buying my own '94 4 Banger YJ stock for less than $4000

Yeah, Jeffy, those M1008s you were talking about with the tougher axle ad locker setup.  Those frigging things are already priced at $4,000 with 7 days left till their  auction closes.  Very high demand it seems for a surplus pickup.  jsut makes me want it all the more
