1995 2.5 Starting problems

I have a '95 Wrangler with 130,000 miles on it. Lately it's been giving me problems starting. When I put the key in and turn it all it does is turn over and over and over but won't start. But if I wait a few minutes I'll here a clicking sound coming from the fire wall and then it'll start. The time that i'm having to wait for the clicking to happen is getting longer each time. Anyone have any ideas as to what the problem is. Thanks :roll:

Does the CEL turn on?  If it does pull the codes from the PCM and see what it say's.

CEL= Check engin light
To pull the codes you have to have a computer reader. Places like auto zone and other auto parts stors rent them, and most of them will read your codes for free if you ask nicely.  :lol:

No, the check engine light does not come on until after I here all of the clicking on the firewall. Some times a minute some times more. The clicking is coming from a bunch of what look like small relays near the battery. :oops:

Check for codes anyway.  Not all codes will trigger the CEL.

He said he has a 95. That's OBD1 and should be able to get the codes throught the ignition switch, right?

I thought there was a listing of codes for YJ on this site somewhere, but if not go here;

chances are your CEL is not coming on right away, but is coming on right after you hear the clicking sound, am I right?  If that's the case, your engine computer is bad and needs to be repaired or replaced.  Just had mine repaired for $187 by the folks at www.siaelec.com  Took 'em one day when they received the part to ship it back, works grand now.

I'm not sure if it's the CEL or not . What ever the lights are that come on when you first put in the key and turn it to the ON position not the start position but the ON position. It's hard to explain it's not my Jeep but belongs to a friend who hasn't got a computer, so I'm trying to help by going online for him. With out the lights it just turns over but won't start but as soon as he heres all the clicking the lights come on and it starts right up. :?

Sounds like a relay problem to me.  Those relays under the hood control power to everything.  If you can get someone to listen closely under the hood while turning ignition on, you might find which one is slow closing.  It will probably quit working all together and then it's not starting at all.  Can you hear the Fuel-Pump come on with the ignition switch?  My 1994 YJ with a 2.5 has the fuel-pump relay under the hood in the main power distribution box(by the battery)  If that were by chance the relay you hear clicking....no fuel .....no start...until it were to "click" sending power to the pump.

Ok that verifies it, if the clicking happens THEN the light turns on over the steering wheel, THEN you can start it, its definitely the computer.  No doubt about it, since mine did the same thing for 3 months before it finally crapped out completely.  Either get it repaired or see if you can find a new one.  Dealer charges like $540 for a new one, sometimes you see 'em on ebay for cheap, but it might not work.  Personally I didn't mind spending the $187 to get it repaired, escpecially since I knew it would be under warranty after they fixed it :D


I can tell you it ain't a relay.  Replaced all of my relays hoping it was just that, but all I did was waste $40 on relays.  :\

to check if you have fuel - try to start it for 2 or 3 seconds and do not turn the key off right away (the pump will run another few seconds after that). On the fuel rail right in the middle there is valve - is the same type you have for your tires - depress the center of the valve and see if you have fuel coming out (careful, as you have between 30 and 40psi in there) - if there is no pressure then you got your answer - it is fuel pump related, if there is pressure you'll have to look somewhere else. You can also take the valve out, put a hose there and put the other end in a bottle (dont try to start the engine but just put the ignition contact on - the fuel pump will run for a few secs once you do that - check to see if there is any fuel coming out).
