Is it worth it to add AC

I ordered my Jeep with no AC because I didn't see the need for it witht he soft top.  Now that I have a 2 month old daughter it would be nice to be able to keep the top up and the temps down.  How hard and expensive is it to go to a junk yard and get the parts to add AC?

Might try Arizona A/C.  They have pretty cheap new A/C kits.

I'd love to have A/C even if it kills performance.  You're not using it all the time and when you do, you really need it and you don't care about performance.

Love my AC. My 97 was without, Gf/wife now didn't ever want to take it because she was always hot.  Didn't really bother me. Now my 99 has AC, and yes i do feel it kick in every time, i wouldn't own a jeep without!

1 day i'm going to put A/C in the jeep... i dont mind it so much, but my g/f wont drive in it during the day lol.

I added an Arizona A/C kit to my 95 Wrangler a few months ago, and have been happy ever since.  They put together a good kit, though the instructions are a little weak.  I managed to muddle my way through the install in about a day.

It was a lot of money for an 11 year old jeep, and my millage dropped from about 20 to 18 mpg.  For the first few days it felt like I was driving with the e-brake on.

However, it's days like today when it's all worth wile.  We hit 111 here in the south west desert of Utah.

I wish I had AC today. (Nice thing about having A/C is that you can turn it off when you don't need it.)  117* is friggin hot where ever you go.  Tomorrows supposed to be hot as well.  Hot enough for a 'Spare the Air Day'.  So all public transit is free.  Might have to use that to get out of town for a while.

I have AC on my 97 TJ. Running 33" tires and only have power loss when startin from a dead stop.  My top end does not seem to be affected.  If you can live with the lack of power in the 4 cylinder then a little less when taking off from a red light is worth the benefits of AC.   I also run an electic fan to help.  You can get a fan from any auto parts store that will fit perfectly into the rear of the stock shroud on the radiator for $60.  Run it to an ignition power source and put a switch on it so you can cut it off if needed, remove the fan from the engine, and there is the extra boost to run the AC.

For A/C check out jeepair.com they have refurbished parts much cheaper than new.  I am trying to get the AC going on my YJ and since the swap from freon to R134 everything I have heard is thats its better to go with new or refurb parts because the oils are incompatible and condensation in older compressors can cause them to lock up.  Also if you call the contact number on the site the guy there is really helpful.

I converted my 84 olds to 134A. As long as you have the system evacuated it'll be fine. Been running mine for 2 years without a problem. But yes if you mix 'em it'll turn into cottage cheese.

Interesting site but the only thing I saw that was referbished was the compressor.

AZ A/C is a bit cheaper at $754.26 but they use a generic Sanden.  It looks like 4x4AC uses the correct Sanden.
