Rubicon Tomb Raider Edition!!! how many were there?????
« on: July 17, 2006, 12:09:27 PM »
I bought the old lady a 2003 rubicon tomb raider editon this weekend. got it for 17,500 out the door with 37,000 miles on it. its super clean definatly a virgin the top doesnt even look like it was ever put down. I have been reading articles on it but i can't find the exact production number of how many of these jeeps were made. Every article i read says " just over a thousand were made" ours is number 1020 so it made me curious if ours was one of if not the last one off the line. if any of you jeep junkies know the exact production number of these limited edition jeeps please let me know!!! Get off, Chris!! Sweet ride there for Elizabeth  :D Or, are you going to be doing one of those, "hey, Hon, I know you're going to be busy this weekend, so you wouldn't mind if I used your Rubicon, right    ...

Not much online as far as production number -- quote is "just over 1000 were made."  I went to the Jeep.com site and posed their "Dr Z" search mechanism the question, "what was the exact number of Tomb Raider Rubicons that were produced by DC." It said that one of the DC people will get the question and come back to me with an answer by email, likely before too long.

Should get your Jeeps up to John Bull at Big Bear, man.

My question to the DC people was, "what is the exact number of 2003 Tomb Raider Rubicons that were manufactured?"  I figured that this special edition was a run just in 2003 (which it probably was...no 2004s right?).  And, I also figured the "meaning" of my question would be clear, given that the TR Rubicon is a limited production run, a collectible and car/truck collectors have historically wanted precise numbers on such things.  Should have been an easy answer, "Oh, 1041" or "Oh 1072 were manufactured."

Anyway, the answer I got back was a sales stat, which doesn't really answer my question -- but, I guess the sales information is the only "tool" the reps have on hand, so they try to fix everything with it.   However, "sales" of the TR Rubicons are a different story than manufacturering, with some certainly being sold in 2004 probably because they were, understandably, going over sticker price.

You might want to write DC and frame your question like, "how many TR Rubicons were manufactured and sold new by DC?" or "I saw that just over a 1000 were suppsed to have been made. So, what is the total number over 1000 that were made, irregardless of year?" Basically, give them the whole story, so they know where you are coming from with the question.  Perhaps my question did not give them enough background on the topic.

I am a little fatigued working on other stuff, so I am not thinking of all the angles here.    This was an interesting exercise.

I have to get a shock mount repaired since it sheared last time out, so probably going to have it looked at by 4x4 doctors in Burbank later this week.  If its all good, then this Sunday or the next would be cool.

Going to ask the DC "Dr. Z" people again about the number of TR Rubicons manufactured.

Also, just as an experiment, asked these guys at "www.justask.com"about the TR Rubicon run yesterday -- justask.com is  basically a research service with a thousands of so-called experts, autmotive and otherwise who, you'd think, can answer this kind of question.  I hit them with it yesterday, and an admin send me an email today saying,"I am really surprised that no one has answered your question; perhaps you could add more information and resubmit?"  I am like, WTF.  Yes, there was a small amount of money involved, but I was looking for an excuse to try out their service -- if they can't answer, they refund it to you :)  Anyway, justask people couldn't do it, either, so I got my 10 bucks back.

I was reading something on the www.getahelmet.com site and there a note about the limited production 60th anniversary Jeeps DC produced for the 2001 model year.  Guy writing had one of the 60th anniversary TJs and was having the same problem as you (with the TR Rubi) trying to pin down exactly how many were manufactured that year.   Apparently, what finally produced answers was a call made to Jeep (HQ presumably)

Here's the article, Chris
http://www.getahelmet.com/60th/info/

I'll see if I can take a minute and holler at DC tommorow or over the next week, since those f#$kers have been letting me down with their info site.

Way too much bling.  I still LOVE this one though.  They even had a run of Limited Edition's that the public could buy.

BTW: if you didn't know the Land Rover above was in the first Tomb Raider.  It was built from the ground up from a rusty bucket and was not built off a fresh 110.  The 110 was a pretty cool buildup and looks 100x better then the bling Rubicon.

Defenders are pretty few and far between.  The 110's are really rare. Only around 550 were even imported into the US.  As for the Range Rovers, they are different.  Like comparing a XJ to a Wrangler.  Compare a D90 with a similar year Wrangler and there is no comparison, the D90 is tougher.

As for the original question, you'll have to take it up with HQ for sure.  I still haven't heard from my friend.

Well, I asked my friend. He said something like 997 were sold to the public.  The rest were kept by the company.  Museum, demo, giveaways, etc.  It's probably the closest thing thing to an official answer you'll probably get.  This was answered by someone in R&D I believe.

How do you know DCX didn't keep the first 100 or so and that's why your number is high??

Maybe they only sold numbers 250 to 1,200....or about 950 (not including the original 250 which they have or gave away or whatever...

The numbers do no corespond with the serial numbers because they are total numbers made.  If anyone knew it would be this guy.  Here's a quote,'We made too many."
