Body lift problem
« on: July 26, 2006, 09:21:46 PM »
I just installed a 1" MML and a 1.25 BL
Every thing installed GREAT!
BUT......
It will not stay in 4X4. If I am able to get it in that is.
I know this has been asked 1000 times, but I have not been able to find a thread in it, I may be not looking at the right search or what ever.
Any one able to refresh my memory on how to fix this problem?
Thanks

Adjust the linkage on the transfer case ... put the shifter into 2 hi and crawl underneath and loosen the bolt on the shift rod, then make sure the shifter is all the way forward and then make sure the transfer case is in 2 hi also and tighten the bolt back up.

Also might check and make sure the t-case shifter bracket is installed correctly.

you might need to cut a biger hole for the shifter lever to move through

Seconf Yellowcritter's suggestion. I went through the same thing with a 1" body lift only. Then I broke the trans and a motor mount (worn out enough). The floor board under the gas pedal moved!!! so there is lots of twist.

There is now a bracket to remove the pivoting point of the mechanism from the floor/trans bracket to just another bracket off the trans. Install is really simple as well as the adjustment. Never had a problem thereafter.

Since I put in a MML in the instructions said I didn't have to put that bracket in.... Ill go out side now and see if I can adjust it, Thanks for the tip.

I put it in 2 HI and adjusted the bolt. When I test drove it, as I clutched, it slipped into neutral. So I put it in 4 HI then loosened the bolt slid the lever all the way Up tell it hit the safety bump tightened the bolt, and so far no problems.

This is a Pic of the bolt I adjusted, for any one who ever has to do this.

That's the bolt. Did you notice the bracket bolted to the floor. The pivoting arms sits between the trans mount and that mount. With a body lift, the arm is not set correct in the mounts and will wear in time. With a broken trans mount, you'll notice that arm will dislodge from the floor mount and that you'll have to crawl underneath to shift the t-case....no wait, that was me.
There is a very small plate you could use to droop the floor mount hole some, but I suggest the trans bracket I suggested before.

Yes I have that plate, But since I raised the Moter 1" the T case went up too. So its not off by that much, If I put the bracket on... It will be off the same amount, just the other way.
I was going to do it wile I was under there, but I saw that it would have been off any wase, so I left it out.
I'm going to keep it just in case, and check on the ware every so often.

Time to upgrade to a Tcase shifter that doesn't attach to the body.

You might want to see what's available off Craigslist.  Some stock Rubicon wheels and tires would be sweet.

Old thread I know, but I just installed a Daystar 1" body lift this afternoon, and am having nearly the same problems.

4 Hi works (so far it hasn't kicked into neutral), but I can't get her into 4 Lo.

I'll try adjusting it in the morning, but regards to what Jeffy said, is there a better linkage/shifter setup?
One that as you said, "doesn't attach to the body"?

Since you have a TJ, your transfer case shifter is connected to the body, IIRC.  Things like body lifts will extend the distance the shifter needs to travel and you'll need to adjust the shifter shaft to give it enough room to move.

There are probably others by now but I only know 2 mfrs of the bracket relocator. Skyjacker and Advance Adapters. I have the Skyjacker bracket.

Basically, the 2 bolt holes bolt onto the trans adapter between trans and tcase. The pivoting rod is cut and put between the 2 brackets. That's it. You remove the floor bracket.

Or you can completely get rid of the TJ monkey motion shifter and replace it with a Novak shifter.
