« on: July 28, 2006, 07:14:21 PM »
hey what do you guys get for gas milage with your 4bangers. i jsut filled up today and i only got 12.78mpg.. not a huge surprise since i have to flor it alot to acl and get over hills but still if i swaped a chevy v6 in my jeep i would get beter milage.. (we have a s10 with 1 in it and it gets 19-20 but thenagain the jeep will be less arodynamic but also lighter)..

so ya what kinda fuel economy do you get and what year and tire size..

mine is a 1990yj with 31's stock gearing and get 12.78mpg
1990 YJ 4cly, ax5, 2.5 inch BDS lift, 31 MTr\'s,  Powertrax-lockers all around, track-bars removed, boomerang shackles, warn m8000 winch, electric fan. [sold but not forgotten]

I have a 97 TJ with 33's and my mpg are close to what you get but I have not changed my spedo gear and I don't know if that affects the accuracy.

15-18 mpg depending on how much highway driving and such.  I tend to floor it quite a bit as well.  I have stock everything with 30s at the moment.

ya i have stock everything except 31's and havent changed the speedo gear so thats taking away some..(about 3-5mph so you could find a percentage to multiply by to get corect but it wont change much.)

and also mine being a 1990 so it has tbi insted of mpi which loses power, fuel econony, and i cant do the easy cheep 4l throughtle body swap

17mpg with 33's  :D

Hoping it's improved a little more now that I've got the 'ol 4-banger running a little better.

I usually get around 19mpg, but i got alittle bit over 20 on this last tank. 31s, stock gearing. I'm sure that v6 will get crappier mileage in the jeep then your s10 also. Make sure your jeep has been tuned up recently.

ya i know it will get crapyer gas milage in my jeep compaired to the s10...

as far as tune up goes.. the moto has 150k miles on it adn the last owner did no matnince ot it other that he got the engine rebuilt but only the valve train.. none of the botom of it was rebiult and after that he cracked the valve cover so it was constantly leaking oil tell i got it for free cuz he ran the brakes so far past shot that the brakes gave out when driving to work.. and i had fixed the oil leak problem but now its leaking again... thinking its a rear main seal but that means tking motorout and rebuild the whole engin(if you want to do it right) but id almost rather put in a new motor than rebiuld the tired 4banger..

im going to put new plugs and wire in it when i get a chance to go to the parts store.. ow ya and another question.

doesn anyone have a vacume hose diagram for 1990 yj's cuz when i put my lift on i found a bunch of dryroted vacume line type things by the rear pasanger fender adn it didnt look like it was doing much so i neglecxted doing anything with it.. but now when i have a full tank of gas you can smell gas and ive noticed that it is runing richer than it should....

its funy cuz now that i think of it when we drive our cj3a with original engin onroad we get something like 18-20mpg which is realy good considering its a old flat head.. and its beter than my jeep is going right now.

I'm getting about 360 miles in the city with my 20 gallon tank, so guess I'm looking at 18mpg city on 29s.

If you're looking for good mpg, buy a 4.0L I6 and add a Supercharger

ACK!  I get that much in my 1986 Suburban with a 350 / TH700R4 / 3.73 / P235/75R15XL factory setup.

On my '98 Wrangler with the factory 4-banger and 4.11s, I get 18-20 m.p.g.  I run 30 x 9.50 x 15 BF Goodrich AT KOs on it.  I did do the speedo gear swap, so I know my data is accurate.

I'm a maintenance/service log nut, so I keep fuel records on all the vehicles.  Would you believe I paid $0.959/gal. for the first tank I put in my Suburban 13 years ago?  Boy, how times have changed...  :?

Maybe time to check your O2 sensor?  Dirty air filter?  You should get more than 12-13 m.p.g. for sure.  Good luck!

Well, a TBI 2.5L is down by around 12hp compared to the later MPFI's.  The biggest problem with Jeeps is wind resistance.  There isn't much you can do about it and if you have to drive on the highways you pretty much have to push it.

Currently I get around 18mpg with my 35's with mixed driving.   If I push my Jeep to 65-70mph mileage starts to drop.  If I was able to drive at 55mph without getting run off the road, I'd be getting better mileage.

When I was running 32's and basically stock, I could get into the mid-20's.  But then that was when speeds were 55mph and actual speeds were 60mph.

I still might get a set of smaller tires for my Jeep when I have to get new tires.  Bigger tires are expensive in more then one way.  Now if I could find someone locally with 33x10.5's or 9.5's to try out.

12-13mpg is a bit low but considering it's probably got high mileage, it might be time for a rebuild or swap.  They still should get 16-18mpg.
