4.56 VS 4.88
« on: July 30, 2006, 09:22:56 PM »
I have stock 4.10 gears in my TJ (4banger) and picked up a set of used 4.56 gears. If I'm going to go throught the hassle of changing gears, should use the 4.56 or is it worth extra money to go to the 4.88. I have 33x13.50 LTBs.  I do very little road driving, mostly aggressive trails and some rocks. The 4.56 were at no cost so I would only be out the install kit and the time. New 4.88 would be about $200 per axle. Thanks for your input.

33x13.50 LTBs's are going to be heavy since they are bias ply and extra wide.  I'd go ahead and go with 4.88's.

They are heavy!! I put a set of 33x10.50 BFG AT TAs on it just to run around on the street and I was amazed how much easier it was to get moving. Those LTB are just cheap tires, good for off road and that's it.
Do you think their is any truth about the 4.88 being weaker due to the small pinion gear diameter?

People say they're weaker but I've never hear of one beeaking because of the pinion.

Go 4.88's all the way. I don't see any reason to go 4.56 unless you want to run 31's and never go up in tire size. I put in 4.88s with my 33x12.50 Kuhmo MT's and wish I would have gone 5.13 or higher in my daily driver.

4 inch lift installed, almost. I am planning on putting 33 inch tires on and I have an Auto trans, do you guy think that I should go with 4.88 or 4.56? This is my daily driver and I don't want to over do it, but I want the power. Is there any one with this setup? What kind of top speed will I get and will my RPM be to high?

Going from 4.10's to 4.88's was a HUGE improvement.  I wish I could have gone with an even lower gear..but of course my D30 won't let me.  5.13's would have been about perfect.

Sell the 4.56's, get the 4.88's.

Everyone is in agreement, including myself...  If you can upgrade the front (and rear) to be able to run 5.13's, then do that...  But the D30 max is 4.88 and it's a great setup...

It's only great if you don't need to go lower. :fish:  I wouldn't go with 4.56's.  The only reason I'm running them is because the 4.88's weren't available when I installed my gears.  At the time, I spend $408 to regear my Jeep.  I did all the labor with Spicer gears.  4.88's a still a bit more expensive but honestly, if you're going to run anything larger then a 31, then you sould either go with 4.88's or hold off until you do an axle swap.  I want to eventually go with 5.38:1.

I need a direct answer if 4.88 with 33 are ok in an Auto trans as my daily driver? Because my jeep is going to the shop today.

I didnt get the jeep to the shop yesterday  .  I have read the FAQ but I was wondering if anyone has personal experience.
Sounds like 4.88 would be the best gear.

If it helps any, from personal experience, I'm running 4.88's.  35 BFG's and a 2.5L...   With a little intake work, exhaust work and ignition stuff, it does ok...

I seriously cannot complain one bit!
