Throttle valve cable question.
« on: July 31, 2006, 11:50:56 AM »
Well, I just got my first 4 banger (with an auto trans) and I want to install a throttle body spacer. Doing so will mess with the setting on the throttle valve cable thus screwing up my shift points. How can I adjust the cable to keep the factory shift points? I'd like a little more air to the engine but don't want to cause trans problems. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  :D

You'll want to space the cable bracket higher so the distance doesn't change between then bracket and the TB.

Ok, thanks for the replies guys. I wasn't sure if I would have a problem or not. I read somewhere that spacers may cause throttle valve cable problems. I guess everything on the internet really isn't always true.

I disagree with not raising the cable bracket to match.  Checkout some of the old posts.  On my automatic it made a big difference in the shifting.  You can try not doing it. If it shifts poorly like others have seen you will know to raise it.  I also noticed that the cable end needed to  be aligned the same as when you took it off or it will stick.  So take note when you remove it.  My experience is with a 97 2.5 auto.  8)

Well, it already shifts into third a little to soon for my liking. I'll try it without moving the cable and if it gives me troubles I'll relocate it.

dexetr30 can I make one more suggestion? I guess I'm going to anyway.

I can't tell the specs on your jeep but if it is over 60k without an auto trans service (fluid, filter, adjustment) you should get one.  It was the best preformance upgrade I did since I got mine in December.  With the auto and the 4 banger we are on the low end of the power chain.

Out of the mods I have tried so far.
CAI (OK) -Nice beefy sound - best use on flat ground freeway speed- I prefer the regular paper filter and horn.  4.0 TB - yes I recommend.  TB spacer - jury still out.  3 row radiator - works great for me, but I live in rainy seattle so I may not be a great barometer.  Champion truck plugs - all I can say is better than the old ones I pulled out.

Seattle's hills beat my poor jeep up but overall with the changes I made it runs a lot better and more consistent then when I first got it.  I have 31's and they seem to be just fine.

Sidscan, the specs on my jeep are as follows:
2.5l
3 speed auto
stock throttle body
stock tires & rims

Mods withing the next two weeks will be a 4.0L TB, and a home built cold air intake along with a TB spacer. A trans fluid and filter change will be within the upcoming month.

The hills/mountains are pretty bad here (Northeast Pennsylvania) as well so I know what you're talk'n about.

Your going to have to post results using the TB spacer with the 4.0 TB.  Since I did mine I get small bump in the idle when it warms up.  Almost like it is getting too much air or like its going through a pattern.  You can almost count 1,2,3,4, bump then skip a cycle and then the same 1,2,3,4 bump.  Maybe Jeffery or some other good soul on the board has encountered this.  It does get kinda old.

I haven't had a chance to pull the tb spacer off and see how it runs without it.  I changed out the front O2 sensor and  made the bump less noticable but it is still there.  Prior to the upgades I noticed it a little but not near as pronounced.  The TB is sparkling clean because I soaked it and took off and cleaned the sensors before installing.  I did reinstall the old 2.5 sensors because the used TB I got had the flat ones.

Good luck these things are damn fun.  I haven't done any serious wheeling but the back roads and little mud puddles have been a blast.  Later Mike
